I have 2 Savages, a 112 in 223 that will shoot most anything under 1/2 inch at a 100 and a 116 in 300RUM that will now shoot around 1". The 116 needed a little help, the recoil lug was about 1/16" from contacting the stock when new. Wouldnt shoot under 3"! A litle Accraglass and no more problems.

The Savages are excellent guns. I do not own one, but I have shot a couple that will easily shoot under 1/2 MOA if the shooter does his part. With the Accu-Trigger Savage does have the best trigger out of the box. Apparently Savage does not have a lawyer setting the trigger pulls for their rifles, as Remington and Winchester seem to have Sad . Fortunately the Remingtons are easy to adjust, just don't send them back to the factory or they'll ding you for a new trigger before they return it to you wtf .

I didn't know that Savages are that easy to convert to other calibers, I might have to get one and try it 8). I think Brownells has some barrels in stock for the Savge.

w4dsb,
The tools needed to do a barrel swap on a Savage are.....
1. A spanner wrench for the nut form SharpShooters Supply or Wheeler.
2. Barrel blocks / vise
3 Optional, but hightly recommended, an action wrench from Wheeler.
4. Go - no go gages.

If you going to the same class cartridge(243-308,etc) all you'll need is the barrel. If you going to something like a 308 from 223, you need a new bolthead, magazine and follower.

Pre-chambered/threaded barrels are avaible from Pac-Nor,A&B and Shaw.

Initally, removing the nut can be a problem. You may need to heat it a bit to break the thread sealant. 19" arms or a dead blow hammer are a plus!

Always use a stripped bolt to set the headspace on the go gage. You may need to readjust the headspace a bit after tightening the nuit since it has a tendancy to open it up somewhat. One tip...use a a piece of scotch tape under the bolthead pin to keep in in place while adjusting the headspace.

After you do one ot two its quite easy. I swap between 25-06,270,30-60 and 338-06 on one action. Another was a 22-250 now a 260 Rem.,a 22-250 and 22-250AI and I 'm waiting on a 250 AI to go on a Stevens 200 action,prevoiusly a 7-08.

A few other suggestions are a Sharp Shooter trigger and recoil lug.

Visit Savageshooters.com for a lot of additional information.

Hope this helps!!!
Bill

WOW....I've changed my barrel swapping procedure a lot since 2005!

Today, I don't use a barrel vise/blocks at all anymore. Now, a clamp on action wrench, a spanner and a tossed together fixture for the factory installed barrels, a modified open ended spanner a rear entry wrench for everything else, without removing the scope or mount(s).

The collection is now up to 13 complete rifles, 8 spare barrels. Calibers run from a 22-250AI up to 338 Federal for the SAs, 25-06 to 300WM for the LAs. The last addition, a 14 AC, originally a 7-08, is now a 260. The next two in the works are a 250 Savage and 6-250AI.

Midway has the Wheeler action wrench and spanner on sale now, $45.99 and $19.99.
