Bushmaster, 140 gr. hp?
If the bullet holds together I got try some. I've shot one Ca. black tail. Unfortunately the gun I had at the time was a 7mm mag. Black tail are pretty darn small deer!! I sold it 2 weeks later for Ruger security six with 6" barrel. Never got a chance after that in Ca. Did you get good penetration thru the deer?

Damn, Boy, where in the hell did you find him? I've seen some 150 to 170 class Blacktail, but, but, 250lb? Our top dogs here in NH barely get that big.
Great job!!! I hunting the coastal range just north of Fort Hunter Ligget. Used to drive down from San Jose.
Now, the 140gr. hp. ? I'm guessing it was broad side.......and did the job. Did the bullet hold together pretty good?

Now I didn't say that I shot him with a handgun. I was just commenting on the small size of the Blacktail deer. In this case I shot him with my .30-30 using a Remington 170 gr Cor lock at 4 yards. I had been trackin' him for most of the morning. When I caught up with him he was trying to hide. When he stood up I popped him...Yup...4 yards and a head shot. Oh by the way...The Blacktail deer in the Great Northwest Cascades are a little bigger the in california. Not uncommon to see 190 to 200 lb bucks...

Hell, he could have saved the round and batted him with the butt of his rifle.

Squirrelbait...The two Blacktails that I have taken with my Colt SAA .357 mag were taken using 140 gr Remington SJHPs on top of 16 grs of 2400 were at around 30 yards or less and were lung/heart shots. Have to admitt, they did run a few yards after the hit. but did go down after about a hundred yards. Both were forked horn and weighed around 120 to 130 lbs.

Bushmaster, my hat's off to ya (not as nice as your hat). Mine was 110lb forked horn....course lost some of the off shoulder with the cannon I used. He was about 80yds away angling away from me.
Thanks for the inputs. I've been testing the Hornady 158 gn Xp*whatevers. I may go with them but will look at the Remingtons and see what they do.

Aah...Old hat...Horse ate it a few months ago...But thanks. It IS a real boost to one's ego to do a hard and long stalk and score using a hand gun.
XTPs (excellent choice. They come in HPs and SPs) Yes...One thing I noted using the 158 gr bullets was with my 4 3/4" barrel I wasn't getting the penitration that I wanted. By going down to 140 gr I picked up more velocity and still had a good weighted bullet.
Why do I keep hearing a 10ringing in my ear? Hello??? Hello!!??

I've used to carry XTP's for defense until i went hunting and made a 25 yard pass through shot with my old 686+ and boy, did it knock her dead! Then i did the 300gr in my 44 and that's pretty impressive as well....XTP is a great hunting round IMHO as well.
I think ya aughta use better heerin pertecten Bushy Cuz ya already have a hard time seein me
