I've had a Harris bipod for years but about the only time I use it is to photograph rifles. The model I have requires a perfectly level surface or you will be canting the rifle. OK at the range but not useful for hunting. When I decide to get another I'll get this:

I say the best bipod that can be used in any positoin.... is a sling. If you learn how to lock in properly like Highpower Match shooters do you can hold MOA in sitting position or in prone. No bipod on the market will allow a range of adjustment that is appropriate for sitting and prone and eneven terrrain. Most compromise in one way or another. That said If you have the time to find a hunting positoin that allows a bipod to get set up... you are rock steady.

I agree with Pumpkinslinger re the Harris bipods - I have a few and used to cart them around the scrub but found you needed a level place to rest them - lots of those out bush!
I use a sling occasionally - always one on the rifle - or use an improvised rest.
The Harris are well made but the style that allows you to adjust your rifle to be perpendicular when the ground is not is the way to go if you feel you need a bipod.

well, having bad knees, I use a sponged flat top cane to add some more distance to my walking. drop down on one bad knee, cane just right hight, probably not as steady as a bi-pod, but it's quick and always there and works on any surface. and like Hunter used to say "works for me"

I have a Harris with the spring latch legs & tilt device.
I find it to be very useful when bunny bashing, as it gives a steady hold for several fast shots.
They DO need the steel parts to be kept oiled though, as the finish doesn't hold up well in the salt laden air here.

Harris makes the S model bi-pod that has the ability to pivot slightly, allowing the shooter to cant on the bi-pod. I use this on my heavy varmint rig. I must admit that it does throw the balance on the rifle off and makes for added weight. I use a set of shooting sticks or a mono pod for all my other guns. The stix are made by Vern Howey, available at allpredatorcall.com and the mono-pod is a home made job. Sticks are great for the long shot, the mono is great for having to swing on a coyote. The Harris is like shooting off a bench, but the down side is having to lift the gun and reposition on a fast moving critter, as most of my hunting is of the predator type.
