I think Vince would rather deal with the water then the snow, hence why so many retired Canadians spend most of the year in the South US (Texas and Florida mainly) instead of here. Laughing

Good to see you came out of it well Vince. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the "storm" Shows how much I keep up with "world" news this time of year, I was clueless it had happened until I read this thread....

Guess I need to take a radio into the woods with me.....

Damn...that would have been scary sitting in an aircraft in that wind. I hope the airline looked after you with drinks etc.

Errrr nope Vince it wasnt scary, just got rocked around a bit......and the drinks bit, well I had to fly it again to Christchurch , New Zealand so a beer was kind of out of the equation!!!!! Was kind of an interesting approach into Brisbane though with the storm right on our tail.
Good to hear you are Ok .

Thanks to everyone. Your concern is humbling and very appreciated, but it is nothing less than what I would expect from such a fine group of people as "The Nuts".

It was certainly a bad storm. It came out in the newspaper that a guy who lives about 300m from me claims he saw a "funnel" when lightning flashed. Don't know about that, but the wind was the worst I have ever encountered.

There are some places only a couple of miles from me that still do not have power and it is unknown when it will be squared away.

You are correct Cary...nobody waited around for the Govt to help...we all pitched in and helped one another. In fact, I left my place until the next day and pitched in to help the neighbours because they were in a worse state than me as my house was intact and no rain could get in.

Having said that, the State Emergency Service, Police and Local Government (Council) were out within about an hour looking for anybody that needed roofs tarped up and/or dangerous trees removed. They have worked non stop since last Sunday night to clean everything up and now the Army is also involved, throwing their weight behind cleanup operations. Police are going door to door finding out what people need so that the State Emergency Service can prioritise the work effort. I didn't realise we had so many tree mulcher/wood chippers in our city...there must be over 50 of them working flat strap.

I cannot praise the State Government enough for the way they have pitched in and got on with the cleanup. A magnificent job by all concerned.

Cheers, Vince

I've never actually lived in snow country, but what time I have spent in the snow, frolicking, tobogganing and trying to ski...I had a ball.

My daughter is moving to Big White near Kelowna in a day or so and she is looking forward to spending the Winter in the snow, although she has only ever seen light snow falling once before. She has bought herself a snowboard, binding and a heap of warm gear and is gonna get into it when she isn't working as a Chef in Happy Valley.

Cheers, Vince

Never had to shovel snow, never needed studded tyres for me car, never been in a blizzard unless you count the wind blowing sand at the beach, and have never ridden a motorbike in the snow....damn, what am I missing in life???? Laughing

Yep...in fact the last two nights, but it wasn't a problem for us...mainly just heavy rain and a few strong wind gusts...no trees left to blow over. Laughing

Vince,

I'm like you....I saw snow in 1984, when I was 34 years old. It hasn't snowed here since. We normally have a few frosts during the winter...just enough to kill the grazing so I'll have to start feeding cattle.

Cary

Steel balls mate...steel....the M18A1 Claymore Mine has 700 steel balls impregnated in resin and "driven" by 1lb of C4 from memory.

Gee Cary, we don't even get frost here. During Winter it gets down to single figures...but not that cold that we get frost. It's 31 C inside my house today, and the humidity is stifling, but it's to be expected with all the rain we've had.

This time last year everybody was in a panic because of the drought...water restrictions were very tight. Now, our dams have more water in them than they have had since 2004. Capacity is climbing towards 50%.

Cheers, Vince
