I would zero it for 100 meters.

I would say 100 meters.

I like Leupold scopes. For this particular cartridge I would choose a 2-7X or a 3-9X. As for rings, if your rifle has the dovetail grooves in the receiver, I would go for Talley quick detachable rings if they're made for your rifle.

See how the gun shoots. If it's accurate enough for you, I wouldn't bother floating the barrel. Actually, I doubt you'll need to float the barrel.

Hi menace.. Wecome to this fine site.
As all the oldies would have said, pull a stump and sit near the fire.. Grab one of Vince's beer (cos he is generous) Very Happy

I dont have any experience with a .17HMR but am also interested in knowing ALL the answer..
Be patient, someone wiht some authority would pipe up and tell you all about it.

In the mean time, why not tell us a bit more about yourself...

Pretty generous with my beer ain't ya mate... Laughing but that's ok, cause that's what mates are for.

Gelan's already welcomed you menace so I'll leave that part of things alone. With a nickname like that I reckon you are gonna fit in here real well.

As Grumulkin said...I would zero at 100 metres.

Not really familiar with the "killability" of the .17 HMR, but I would imagine that on a fox sized critter 100 - 150 metres would be max for a good clean kill, assuming you do your part with shot placement. Download Point Blank...IT'S FREE...and that will help you immensely with data etc.

The world is your oyster as far as scopes are concerned. I like Leopold (but they are out of my price range), however there are many very good quality scopes out there that will meet your needs. I suggest a visit to your local TRUSTED Gun Shop to check them all out and find out what is in your price range. As for power...I would think that 100 - 200 metres you wouldn't want anymore than either a fixed 6x or 8x or a 3-9 Variable. From my experience you will most likely do most of your fox hunting towards late afternoon and dusk so you need to take that into consideration with the scope you choose.

As Gelan said mate....why not tell us a bit more about yourself...

Cheers, Vince

Thanks Duce...that is a really nice thing to say mate, I'm humbled.

I'd be proud to sit down and have a beer with you buddy....in fact I'd be proud to share a camp fire, and a beer of course, with any of the guys on HuntingNut.

Cheers, Vince

Maybe you blokes scared him off Very Happy

welcome to huntingnut MENACE the oldie umm elder eerr the other ones said it about the stump and the beer.

Hey Vince chuck in a bottle of single malt and i will keep the camp fire burning Cheers Popcorn Party .

Menace CZ 17HMR straight out of the box is a good little rifle, unless you want to do compition shooting i don't think it's worth the effort to float your barrel.

Like the others said sight her in for 100yds and it will drop your fox out to 150yds providing you do your bit right.
17HMR round is based on the 22 Magnum round the bullet is very frangible meaning it will break up if you hit the ground or your target without worying if it will travel a long way. the 17 round generally will stay inside the animal with very little pelt damage. The only real draw back with the 17HMR is it's inability to buck the wind and can travel 10" left or right in 10kph crosswind.
the rounds come in either 17grain or 20 grains you will need to try all the differant rounds to find out which type your CZ 17 likes.
I use 17 HMR marlin bolt and get my best accuracy from the winchester Vmax round 1" at 100yds. I use a 3x9x40 Bushnell scope works well in all low light and spotlight situations. Longest shot (measured) was 145yds head shot a rabbit real pleasing thump when it hit
Whew that was along one i am out of breath now
Enjoy your toy

Menace, let me join in welcoming you to Hunting Nut. Nothing like having another youngster on board. That 17 Hummer should work real well with a 100 meter zero. Hope the beer is cold enough for you.
