D-S

Do ya work on the triggers?

The Encores aint 'xactly known for good fire control.

I started to download Mike's "do-it-yerself" trigger fixins about a year ago, but never did let the DL finish.

Now I cant even get his page to load (stupid dial-up connection) to post the link.

BARREL STUB:

This is where I take a factory barrel and cut it back to a total length of approximantly 3". This "short" barrel is what is referred to as the STUB...

I then take the STUB and internally bore it, ream it and thread it...

I now take a Match Grade stainless steel barrel blank and thread it and chamber it...

Now I screw the chambered barrel into the STUB, cut the extractor slot, "finish" the barrel, crown it, drill and tap for scope base, drill and tap for forend and pillar bed forend to that specific barrel...

I can post pictures of the process if that will help....

Also, the purpose of building barrels this way is to avoid the heat build-up that is generated by the welding process used to attach the lug to the barrel...

This heat build-up distorts the metal and creates both hard and soft spots in and around the chamber area. This can be both seen and felt when rechambering a barrel...

By building a barrel by my method of BARREL STUBBING, there is no heat build-up or stress that is induced in the new barrel blank and as such, it allows for a much more precise chamber to be cut and therefore, it produces a much more accurate barrel. In no other way can a barrel be produced as stress free and as precise as what I have done here....

That is how I made a barrel for my brother's Contender. I used a .358 rifle barrel cut to 15 inches for his 357 Maximum barrel. I am happy to say that it shot better than the factory barrel he got six months later. (he had ordered it two years before.) It is an aduous process that take time and patience to accomplish.

Basically it eliminates the barrel (chamberer, maker) from having to do the critical welding of the lug on the barrel.

Thanks for the info and pics DS, I now know what a barrel stub is !!!!

About 5 years ago I was looking into the Virgin Valley Gun Works ( no longer in bussiness Crying or Very sad ) Thompsons.
They had a forearm hanger they claimed fixed issues that stressed the barrel and helped its accuracy.
Any comments on this issue would be greatly appreciated !!!

Kerry and Jeff Stratton (formerly from VVCG) still operate and use the company name MGM...Match Grade Machine and they still make excellent barrels. Steve Stratton operates Stratton Custom and sells parts and accessories for TCs.

Correctly setup, in my opinion the barrel hanger system works and it works very well. Its easy to work with, repeatable and once your barrels are setup with the bar, quick to change. Has alot to do with how your foreend is made.
