Took me 20 min of pretty hard work to get my 17HMR barrel clean from the factory goop it came with. I hope they didnt testfire it a whole lot while it was that dirty! I couldnt believe the first patch out of it... looked like it had been used to wipe off the inside of my trucks oilpan. Anyway its pretty clean now so I can do some break-in work.
Gotta pick up some new scope rings tonight as the others were too low (forgot the barrel doesnt taper so the scope hits with low rings).

Hey DallenC,
Maybe you already answered this in another post, but what scope did you get? Also what rings are you going to mount it with?

Well... every gun I own except for my muzzleloader wears a Leupold but I just couldnt plunk down more money for a scope than the gun cost! Expecially being such a light rimfire where recoil is irrelevant.
I looked around and went with a 3x9 Simmons. The clarity is surprising and it is pretty good quality. It seems more than solid enough to handle the HMR. For rings I settled on the new Leupold Med height rings that fit weaver bases (HMR comes with weaver bases). My .50 cal ML wears a 1x simmons scope (we are restricted to 1x scopes here) and I couldnt be happer with it.
Overall it seems rock solid so tomorrow I think I can squeeze in some shooting time and see how she does. If i win the lottery someday I'll swap it out for another 6.5x20 Leupold

That reminds me of my first SKS. It was in military storage since the Viet Nam era. I cleaned it really well, except for one part. I completely forgot the gas tube. When I touched off the first round, my face was plastered with cosmoline (sp). It a good thing I was wearing my shooting glasses.
I don't recommend making that mistake. My brother thought it was the funniest thing he had ever seen.

i'm a great savage fan in fact most of my rifles are either savage or remington , never had one dirty yet , wonder if it may have been a "return" that someone fired a few rounds through , didn't clean, and the store resold it as new ?

if they did you would be the proud owner of a firearms store!! even if you buy a firearm walk out the store turn around and walk back in and say you changed your mine, it is still a used gun! must be sold as a used gun.

wow , it's sure not like that here , if like you said and bring it back here it can still be called new, so long as in original condition , and how many store clerks would actually check to see if the barrel was dirty . If they are that tough in the us then i say bully for them, wish it was like that here , plenty of times you walk into stores here to find ripped ratty boxes taped back together and you know it's been bought and returned before. i have brought stuff back to a store only to find same item back on shelf next day . And knowing that it WAS the item you returned the previous day

GreyWolf,
Never seen a store that didn't call a return "Like new" at least here anyways.
Kind of like a car, once it drives off the lot its not new anymore.

I believe that once a gun has been called in to the NICS system, it is considered "used". I'm sure Handloader knows more than I do.
I bought my Benelli Nova from the used gun rack at a nearby Gander Mountain after the original purchaser returned it less than 2 hours after completing the transaction. He told the sales guy he couldn't figure out how to tell his wife he bought a new gun, so he chickened out and returned it. It cost him (and saved me) $75.00.

Here even at canadian tire , they just put it back on the shelf no $ off even , wally world same thing, wholesale sports , no way are they giving you bucks off , they just put it back in the rack and wait for the next guy to come along and buy it. I wish there was a law here so that they had to sell it as used. Manitoba seems to have the typical "buyer beware" attitude.

Well Canadian Tire here stopped selling firearms long ago, and I don't think Walmart here ever did, air guns yes, firearms no. But then again they tape up nad try to resell anything without mentioning it was a return if they can, so it doesn't surprise me.
