I agree Joe, but which one do you pick? A lot of nice choices.. Thumb hole or not, Laminated colors or standard wood..
Glad to see someone up this early, I got up about 4:00 am, made a pot of coffee and pulled my wife's car out of the garage to warm up, she has to work today. Cold up here about 19 degrees and blowing. Burrr.

I have a little experience with Richard's. Their idea of 99% is much different from mine. Be prepared to do a few hours of fitting and bedding work. The exterior on the stock I bought was nothing short of fabulous. But I was a couple of days getting the action and barrel to fit correctly.

If you want a real drop-in, try Boyd's at www.boydsgunstocks.com/default.htm

If you do a search, then you will find that although the stocks are well thought of, it can take forever to get one & their customer service sucks (phone never answered, emails ignored, promised delivery time missed by months, etc.).

not to parrot falphil, but GO BOYDS thats all there is to it.. they may have what you want right there in stock, they may have to wait till the next run, so call them and talk to em. great people there at BOYDS and when they say the actions will drop in with very little working, they drop in and start the screws for you!! i removed a CRAP synth stock from savage, and got one of thier thumbhole varmits, the longest thing of putting it on and everything was i decided to hand rub the finish, other wise, oh and the center plastic spacer they use pop it out and check for thickness, i had to shave a bit off mine. and if i say so big differece in look feel preformance!!

GO BOYDS!!!

Well, I went with the Boyd's JRC Classic Pepper Laminate Stock, I had to do some fitting to allow for the larger fluted stainless barrel, but I got er done. Love the looks and feel, better than the synthetic..IMO.

What a handsome stock! I have a Boyds pepper thumbhole stock on my 204 ruger. Good stocks.

I own about a dozen Richards rough inletted stocks from utility seconds to AAA grade. I have had one damaged in shipment and one that was unacceptable as a second, both were replaced immediately, without question and without trouble. I have three guns in the gallery.

I also own about a half dozen Boyd stocks that I use for patterns and buy for cheap when I can find them, at places like Gunparts. Boyds makes a decent stock that is more at the utility grade end of the scale.

I prefer the Richards and prefer the dual grip thumbhole stock made by Richards to other thumbhole designs. However, design prefrence is like parts of the body....everyone has one Very Happy The Swedish Mauser M-96 stock in my article on Building the Swedish Mauser is a Richards.

The only company I would not reccomend is Heritage because of my experiance with a single stock for sale that when recieved was a different grade than advertised, was twisted and was a different price. Bad business.

I do like Wenig and Show Me for shotgun stock inletting. Show Me does LC Smith and Beretta 391 wood.

If you want a real nice stock, buy a blank and have Ed Shulin cut it for you. Ed teaches stock making at Trinidad School of Trades. He gets $40 plus $10 shipping to cut your blank. I have stopped using my duplicator for the most part and u8se Ed. His number is (719) 846-2301.

Do not expect to stick a barreled action in a piece of wood. If you do, buy a factory take off or a plastic stock. Stock makers take months to finish a stock and charge $800 minimum with inletting and finish 12 to $1500.

Just remember a $100 stock takes the same amount of time to get right as a 500 stock and the wood price is nothing compared to the work.
Ed
