Hi all.

Just came back over the Christmas break (only 3 days, not long enough). Gone shooting to Cobar (in the middle of NSW, for those not from this beautiful land of Oz). Very Happy

Okay, first what I used. I loaded up batches of
-#1. 130gr Hornady JHP over 16gr of AR2205 - 1750fps
-#2. 200gr protected point? Woodleigh over 13gr of AR2205 - 1100fps
-#3. 220gr round nosed woodleigh over 12gr of AR2205 - 980fps
velocities averaged from 5 shots, measured at the range in Sydney.

Results from wild goats by load types
#1. A young billy shoulder shot from about 50 meters - drops after 5 meters. The bullet seems to be broken apart after hitting the shoulder blades. No shoulder roast recovered from this goat. Confused
#2. A small nanny shot at low chest/ just behind and above the front legs joint at about 70 meters - drop after standing still for about 5 to 10 seconds large pool of blood were under the carcass when recovered. Shocked The reason for it to go low, I think, is the distance. I am sure I was aiming a tad higher.
#3. A large nanny shot on shoulder/just where the neck join the shoulder at about 35 meters - drops instantly, then gone on kicking for about 30 seconds afterwards. Found out that the bullet broke the goats neck. (lucky shot I think..)

Tried I did, I could not find the projectiles from #2 and #3 loads. They are definitely not in the carcass.

Unfortunately no pigs around at the time, so I cannot try them on heavier skinned varmint.
Looking at the result, I am very happy with the 300 whisper.
I got 3 shots, 3 clean kills and all of them drops right away.

I would quite comfortable to recomend this caliber for goat shooting Smile It is a very mild caliber with a lot of punch. and as bonus, I recovered almost ALL meat from these goats. I only lost the front shoulder from #1 load.

The load #2 and #3 sounds (by ear) a tad like 22 magnum if not louder. The #1 is LOUD compares to the others.

So there is my quick report. Any comments?

Gelan.

PS. I also proud to proclaim that both my daughters (aged 12 and 8 ) have shot their first rabbits and skin and cook and eaten them. And in the process, they actually FEED me with meat for the first time Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Gelandangan,

C'mon don't hold back tell us what you think about that 300 Whisper Very Happy

It sort of sounds like you kinda favor this round. Would that be a fair statement? Cool

Gelandangan,

Guess load 2 and 3 are winners (less meat damage) would just need to get some range time to test what is the most accurate one. Smile

Mind you I dont even know if you actually eat the goats you hunt in Australia and if you dont I guess it wouldnt matter the damage. Confused I would but thats only because I've got a policy of eating anything I kill unless it turns out to be infected with something bad. Cool

And good job on getting your 2 daughters into hunting! Smile Especially because they did clean and cook them. Shocked I know plenty of "tough" guys that cant do that. Very Happy

@ PaulS

the 300 Whisper behaves like my Rossi Puma (copy of 94 Winchester) in .357 Magnum. Same trajectory, same energy at 100 yards. But with some fringe benefits ie. at 200 yards the energy is twice that of the 357 magnum and the muzzle blast is WAAAYYY quieter..
So Yeah I like the 300 Whisper. Very Happy Very Happy

@ Dimitri

I love wild goat meat. As long as it is not an old billy (too smelly) I eat them. They are nice organic grown meat, free range and free of all artificial additives. Very Happy
I do not eat wild pigs (except for sucklings) nor do I eat carnivores I shot (crows, foxes etc)
I do not shoot flying animals so I do not eat them.
I used to eat rabbits before they introduced the Calici Virus to them, but have stop eating them since late nineties, until last easter when I shot a few and check them not to be diseased. These rabbits my daughters shot are clean, but a bit thin and have very little fat, so they are a bit tough to bite. Plus the fact that my girls never cooked rabbits before Very Happy .

And, yeah load #2 and #3 are great. However, they are (the trajectories) very confusing unless you get used to it. Range estimation is very important wiht this caliber methinks.

Very Happy Very Happy
Life is good

Gelan,

That trajectory just gives you a excuse to practice more at random targets like dead trees etc in the forest that you run into. Very Happy

Sometimes when the meat is too tough I put some butter on it and cook it (relative term just bast it alittle before the cooking like this) at like 300F in the oven it works the butter fat into the meat and is easyer to chew, some people dont like meat cooked this way though. Confused

Great detailed information with actual field results!

The 300 whisper is an intrigueing concept. It is easily discounted if not understood. Most of us fell prey to the hyper velocity, uber trajectory, hell fire and brimstone calibers of the 60's and 70's. I am just tickled to death to see some actual common sense type folk involved with calibers such as the whisper.

I've read some but haven't taken the jump yet. I do have a mini-mauser that is begging to be tinkered with.

Thanks for some great information.

I worked with the little 30s for a few years and was around when the Whisper broke into the silhouette game. I also have had the pleasure of talking to the two fellows that did the development work on the round, JD Jones amd Jim Rock.

The Whisper is an excellent round, especially for that which it was designed, social applications involving supressed, sub sonic fire from an AR at a fairly long distance, with good energy.
