A number of years ago I was looking for a shorter, lighter gun to carry in the field. At the time my favourite rifle was a Ruger 77 chambered in .280 Remington. Wanting to stick with a 7mm, I eventually chose a Browning Micro in 7mm-08. The Browning has a 20" barrel & weighs approximately 6 pounds, yet recoil from the 7mm-08 is very moderate. It is fast handling, light & a dream to carry all day. In my opinion the 7mm-08 is a very under-rated caliber. With a 140 grain bullet it will knock down any deer out there, I know because I live in Western Canada & have killed some real bruisers with it. Not my first choice for elk or moose, but then again I would not feel undergunned either if I had Nosler partitions or Failsafes in the chamber. One excellent point brought up in previous threads however is availability of ammo. You will not find it on the shelves at gas stations or smaller stores. I live in a city of 50,000 and only one store carries it. Good excuse to get into reloading though. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

In short action, you can't go wrong with 7mm-08 or the venerable 308. If long action I would consider 270 or better yet the 270 WSM. Ammunition availability.........well, you'll have to weigh the pros and cons.
Now go buy a new gun!! LOL
Let us know what you decide on!

Well, I'm retracting my vote on the 270WSM. I just had lunch with a fellow shooter and friend that is very much in the know about the firearms industry. The short story is the 270WSM is it is in trouble. It is very possible that it might go away. This all revolves around some legal issues that I won't go into.
I would stay away from it at this time.

I'm a little leery of the short mags. for that reason. Too many a like cal. out there. I'm not sure what cal. to go with my Encore. I might go small and use it for yote hunting. 22-250, 223, 7mm08, I already have a 7mm. Mag. I kinda put it on the back burner since I bought a new scope for my 7 mag.. What do you use for them critters?

Glock,
Can't help but point out the 6.5mm rounds as I am a 6.5 kinda fella.
The 260 is an outstanding round and with bullets from 85 grains to 160 grains it can be used for just about anything in NA. The 6.5x55 is a great old cartridge and praised by the Swedes for everything from bobcat to Moose. If you want a varmit cartridge try the 85s at 3,500 fps, want a deer cartridge, try the 140s at 3,000 fps. The 120 at 3200 makes a great antelope or deer round. The 160 at 2400 - 2500 will go right trough a moose. Just make sure you have a 1-8 twist barrel. The 1-8 twist will handle all weights of 6.5 bullets, including the long 140 TSX Barnes.

I've built a few 8mm/06's,a8mm/300winmag. I'm currently in the process of biulding a 3 barrel 8mm type rifle. It will have an 8x57 barrel, an 8mm/06 barrel, and a 8mm/300winmag barrel all on 1 stock, 1 action, 2bolts. It will be a shooter for sure. Dave

The 8mm Mauser is my only current big game rifle, I'm thinking of going with a 200gr or so bullet one of these days for my FN49 to replicate the service round with a hunting bullet.

Fireball,
What action are you using for your switch barrel gun?
