Hi all,
I am just wondering if the gun I bought is new or not. I can't tell. Here's the story.
Last Wednesday, I visited a gun shop (biggest shop in my area) and ask for the gun that I like "Remington 870 Express Super Magnum with 3 1/2 with wood stock. Of course they don't have it since I already talked to them before.
I asked them if they can ordered for me, they said yes. So, I took their business card and the next following day (thursday morning) I called and asked them to ordered for me. They agreed and told me it will be in Mon/Tue, which is two/three days ago. I called back on Tuesday, they said they don't have it and said that I need to deposit $100 buck first. I was of course upset, since they have my number and couldn't give me a call and tell me that. I hung up the phone and called a different shop. And again, no one carries that gun with the wood stock. And hour later, the man at the shop that didn't order my gun called. He said, (forgot what he exactly said) if it comes tomorrow, you want me to give you a call? I said yes. I was a bit happy again. So, yesterday (wednesday) I received a call and dropped by the shop and saw the gun. Gun was in the remington box, rust color was on the foam around the barrel (you know that color from metal when it's wet). The manual is there with registration card. I was thinking, so when he told me that he didn't have it and called me back an hour later (after I gave him an unpleasant attitude of letting me wait and not telling), did he call the supplier and asked them to ship it over night? Or did he grab and old gun from somewhere and polished it....???
I'm new to gun and cannot tell if it's new or not. Is there a serial number on every gun? I saw the serial # on the box but didn't pay attention on the gun. The piece of rubber at the end of the stock is still new. Well, that can be replaced easily. I see oil near the action.
Well ... any input would be appreciated. I don't want to be ripped of just because I don't know anything about gun. Thanks all ...
Tom

Wishstar,
What area are you from ?? Might be the suppliers warehouse is damp.
The gunstores here if the distributor has it in stock normally get it the next day or 2 at most so I'm doughting its a used gun at this point especially because it has the box and manual.
Tell me does the box look like its been in a damp enviorment ??
Dimitri

New guns are usually coated with cosmolene for long term storage. My grandson bought a gun like yours accept for synthetic stock. There was some rusty substance like you described inside the box it came in. We cleaned the gun, like you should with any new firearm, and it was fine. May have just been some cosmolene.
You could contact the manufacturer on the internet and try to determine from the serial # when it was manufactured. But, that may not prove too much since the gun may have been out the factory door for a while waiting on a loving owner like you to come along
Keep it coming...

WishStar,
If it makes you feel any better a outdoor store near me (LeBaron) sells the Remington 870 SuperMag in wood for 390$.
I dont think its used.

Wishstar - I have purchased two of the 870 super mags form Walmart when they sold guns and they both had the "rust" around the muzzle and discoloring the styrofoam packing. I oiled them up and ran a bore snake through them and they are just fine. If the box had not been resealed several times, you probably got a new gun from old stock. Shoot it and enjoy it. ( BTW - I paid $275 on clearance two years ago )

Oh, you are lucky. Walmart stops selling guns ...
By the way, thanks a lot guys. hmmm I forgot what I am about to ask ... thinking ...
oh yeah, ... checking bore (i think i use the right word) will tell me is it new or not? A shotgun bore should be smooth right? WHat if there's a line of scratch or something? .... just for my precaution; when I pick up my gun november 4th at 5:30PM Pacific time hihihi ... counting ...

There is far too much to loose for a business to misrepresent a firearm as "new". In fact, it is a criminal act.
The serial number is stamped on the receiver.
The barrel should be dirty as the shotgun was fired with proof loads by the manufacturer.
Added chokes on many Remington models are optional, not included.
Be sure to disassemble the shotgun and clean it thoroughly before the initial useage. This will preclude a whole range of problems.
And, welcome to the forum!!
