At 63 and 5'7" and 155 lbs. The venerable .30-06 is about all the recoil I want to deal with at the moment... Very Happy

The 06 is just amazing. I never owned one until last year, naw that ain't quite true. I did own a sportarized Arisaki in high school, my first CF rifle. Some gun bugger had rechambered it to 30-06. Amazing thing is it would hit coke cans at 100. Anyway back to the story, when I put together a pre war Model 70 in 30 US Government o6. Got to playing with it and it is pretty amazing stuff to shoot a 300 belted mag and then shoot the old o6 and get very close results, with sub .5 groups. The new powdres and bullets just make the 06 sing. You can take it just about anywhere and feel well heeled.
The 30-30 in a stout single shot is a real beast. My 10 Merill pistol would do 200 fps better than a 94 with the same bullet weight, just different powder. I dropped a 250 lb boar with a 170 FP out of the Merril like he was struck by lightning.

In just one sentence, george20042007 lists six of the ten best cartridges ever developed!

What would be the other four?

I can think of 2:

8mm Mauser, The "European" 30-06.

303 British, Its taken its fair share of big and dangerous game in the world.

About the other 2 I'm not to sure. Confused

I am absolutely not ashamed of my "ol' jack handle" (mod 94). It has taken quite a number of deer for me over the years. Even through Northwest buck brush. Rain drops don't seem to slow it down much either. When workin' the tall timber and trackin' in close quarters it is very hard to beat...Even took a forked elk once with it...

In no real preticular order:

45-70 Goverment.
8MM Mauser
303 British
30-06 Springfield.
300 Weatherby
30-30 WCF
243 Winchester
45 Colt
45 ACP

The 270 would make a fine addition to the list. Smile

I do however like how resonable the list is. No Super-duper Ultra mags on it Very Happy

The 30-30 is a good round. Someday I'm going to have to get myself one. Smile

Dimitri

Of course the list is subjective, at best. Shocked There are too many cornerstone cartridges to have a list of but 10, the list must be 20 or 25. There are certin cartridges that are just standards world wide, like the 12ga, the 22LR, the 7.62x39, the 458, the 375, etc. This is my list:

458 Win Mag
375 H & H
338 Win Mag
8mm Mauser
303 Brit
300 Win Mag
30-06
308
7.62x39
30-30
7mm Rem mag
7x57 Mauser
270
264 Win mag
6.5x55
243
22-250
223
45 ACP
44 mag
357mag
9mm P
9mm K
22 LR
12ga

I can see that everyone is afraid to mention the .38 Special...I bet most of you have one...I have three...

This is something else...Seeing all these great and notso great calibres show up on "Handloading Myths Exposed" string. Is there something to this??? Should I read something in this??

Bushmaster,

Its simple, all cartrages are over rated Very Happy

Too many do the same job. I'm sure if someone thought long and hard they could cut down the list of whats needed for hunting anything in the world down to 5 or so Wink

5 huh?

You will be happy to learn that at least one fella out and about thinks 1 gun will do. I was told by a guy, serious and straight faced, that a 375 H & H was all anyone needed for rabbits to elephants.

Mr Bushytail take that, ka-boom... Very Happy No shooting squirrels in dry weather, only you can prevent forest fires. Flying squirrels take on a new definition. Squirrel flambe prepared in the field.... Very Happy
