I can't remember if I've mentioned this here but...
If the govt "forgives" $10,000 of your student loan you will be required to pay $2,200 in income tax that year. Also the govt insures that they get paid that $10k because they'll take it out of our taxes.

education and healthcare should be free for citizens of a country....
student debt is a ball and chain that should never have been allowed to happen in first place.

Aah...Elvis. I didn't force them to go to exclusive colleges. I made a very good living as a Master Marine & Industrial Diesel Mechanic. Because of my 22 years in the Navy and Medicare (which I still pay for at the tune $169.00 a month) my health care is almost free. I EARNED IT!! So can they and not on my dime.

I'm with Bushy. They made the choice to borrow money for their college. It's not my fault they frequently choose degrees that have no real world value.
I have two nieces, sisters. One went to a state college and got her degree in Physical Therapy. The other went to a fancy/expensive out of state school to get a degree in Theater Arts. Guess which one can pay her loan back.
Public education up through high school can be had for "free" here. Unfortunately it is generally worth exactly what they paid for it, but that's a different issue.
There is no such thing as free education and health. The tax payer is paying for it.

I suppose I’m a little out of line here now by mentioning that now I am VA Gold Card TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated) I do not have to pay the annual Medicare Levy, although my wife has private health insurance that costs around AUD$2500 per annum. I get free medical and dental (only $2500 of dental per annum, but can get more on application by the Dentist to VA). The free Medical extends to any Doctor and or Specialist (Orthopaedic Surgeon etc) that will accept the VA level of payment that mirrors the Medical Association fees. I also get in home physio and associated care, including an Exercise Physiologist and hydrotherapy.
On top of this I get my lawns mowed every fortnight, my hedges trimmed monthly, gutter cleaning and window washing all covered by VA. They have also provided me with a recliner chair, and if I need anything else it only takes a call to my provider and they organise it for me.
In the past 20 years I have not had to pay for any medical or dental expenses, but I am careful to check with the Doctor first to ensure they will accept the VA rates. So, the 26 years I spent in the Army, pounding the hell outa my body, has in a manner of speaking paid off.
Sorry Bushy.
