Played with my Ruger Precision Rimfire, .22 LR, last Saturday. Stock rifle with a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 scope in a PEPR mount. Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity ammo. 100 yards, off a front bag. The two shots at the top were to see where it was hitting. 10 shot group. I know the one to the right was my fault. The vertical stringing probably is too. The group is 1.8" tall and 1.1" wide. 0.4" wide, w/o the flyer.

I’ve always been of the belief that vertical stringing like that is caused by incorrect breathing.

Slow moving projectiles like a 22lr is very prone to vertical stringing due to velocity changes. Did you cronograph any of these?

and maybe try subsonic? They avoid the interference of the shockwave...

That trip to the range was mostly to make sure the gun was on paper, so I just grabbed the ammo I had the most of. When I shot that group I don't think there had been more than 30 rounds through the gun?

Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity supposedly starts out at 1130 ft/sec. I didn't chronograph them. I've got some subsonic loads around here someplace that I can't wait to try. Wolf Match Target shot very well in other .22s I have.

I did wonder about the consistency of the velocity. However, I was also only using a front bag, so the stringing was probably my fault. Next time I'll use a steadier set up and be more conscious of technique.

The gun sure looks like it wants to shoot! I'm pretty pleased with it. It's even got me considering getting another one in .17 HMR.

Aguila has been fairly crappy ammo for us ... fun to spray out of 22's that will cycle it... but its just more cheap ammo. It wont cycle my SR22s consistently, and those pistols will usually shoot anything.

I love my 17HMR rifle, its dead accurate at 100 yards, I can hit dimes if I do my part.

Ruger 10/22, Marlin M81, Winchester M290 (custom) and a Colt Woodsman (second generation).

Ammunition? CCI Mini-mags.

I've been picking off armadillos at 80 yards from my front deck with the Winchester and a period Redfield 4X scope.

I have never tried Aquila since they are not available in my local shops.
So far I have been very happy with Winchester Power Point on my Ruger 77 and Winchester 320

Every .22rf is different in their ammo preferences.
The fun comes in finding which one works in that particular rifle.
Usually not the type you have a cupboard full of......

CCI standard is available in many places now as low as $60 a brick. It shoots as well as the SK and Wolf Target in my rimfire target rifles. Give that a try and see if the group dials in better. I can get quarter sized groups at 100 yards out of two rifles with that.

A couple of things that I have found with rimfires. First, they shoot better if the barrel has been "seasoned", meaning that the length of the barrel has been coated with lube. The rule of thumb is that 1 round per inch of barrel will evenly coat the bore with lube. Second, most "precision" rimfires will do their best with subsonic or standard velocity ammo. At my elevation (4500') that is right around 1100 fps, depending on the temperature. Third, that cool relaxing breeze is not your friend.
The vertical stringing indicates inconsistent velocities. Your gun will most likely do a lot better with more consistent ammo. CCI Standard Velocity is a good place to start.
Oh, and less than 2 minute groups at 100 yards from a factory stock gun is outstanding performance.

CCI of any type just does not perform well in my CZ 453 varmit.
It does however like winchester power points and eley subsonics.
Two opposite ends of the .22 ammo spectrum.
Took around 25 different boxs of ammo and a bit of range time to find this out.
