We're screwed here in Utah. Snow is just about gone, and its mid June still. Some years we have snow on the mts until August. Lakes are very low, new emergency fishing regulation changes allowing increased catch rates on lakes expected to go dry in the next month (10 lakes so far with lax limits).
Its going to be ugly for sure... but next year even worse. I've chatted with my wife about buying a used 1500gal outside water tank from a old farm sale. You can get them for around $1200... fill it over winter or early spring when the runoff is at max. Use it in the garden over the summer with drip lines. Gets sticky with the laws and catching runoff... I'd hide it in the back yard lol

I'm taken back that one can't collect rain water on their parcel. I looked up the law but doesn't make sense.
Now homeowners are able to harvest up to 2,500 gallons of rain water per parcel. If the harvesting system consists of more than two containers or has a maximum storage volume greater than 100 gallons, it must be registered with Utah Division of Water Rights.
Seems like anything more that collects more than 200 gallons must be registered with the state.

It started as a health and hygiene thing mate. With all of the aircraft flying over, and the increasing numbers of cars, trucks etc, there was concerns about the residue of combustion settling on house roofs and subsequently being consumed by those collecting rainwater from their roof.
Then the authorities saw dollar signs and, as has happened over here in some areas, laid claim to the rainwater that falls from the sky…yep, authorities have said they own the rain and as such you have to pay for it if you collect the rainwater. Out here in Australia, there are some authorities have told farmers that they must estimate the capacity of, and pay for, the rain they collect in the dams on their properties…hence the direction for collections of water over a certain amount must be registered with the authorities. I’m so over State Governments and Local Council authorities elevating themselves onto the same level as God…all in the name of the almighty dollar.

and they will collect there money even if there is no rain to collect because of a drought.

you can probably get ahold of 1000ltr pods for next to nothing...lots of places use them....very easy to hook up to rainwater down pipe and also easy to hook a garden hose onto bottom end . the idea a council can stop you collecting rainwater is obscene ...perverted even....
