bet the recoil was "interesting" and the sights arent usable...pretty sure our ANZACs had set ups with periscopes so could use sights and have AIMED fire....

Both sides had periscope rifles of one type or another. Why...because you couldn’t afford to stick you head above the parapet because of snipers or sharpshooters with periscope rifles.

the old saying "necessity is the mother of all invention" was never so true, as in this case.
the SMLE would have been reasonable candidate for the job with its heavy weight and low recoil..... kind of predates the newfandled trend of hugging oneself when using a bipod instead of holding forestock like it was made for....
