I thought this was a neat article to share for both US and Australian history buffs. About the WW2 Lend-Lease programs.

Fascinating. I didn't know that the lend lease thing worked both ways.
I shake my head at the scale of the post war waste.
I wonder how many bits of kit were quietly spirited away to start a second career eg a willy's jeep being used as a farm hack.

Still happens today.
Depending on what the contract for the item calls for.
The major reason why the G model and possibly a predelivery model F111s became landfill on the aircrafts retirement.
All buried out at Swanbank.

I guess this must be part of getting an end user certificate?

I believe so.
In the F111s case a lot goes back to the cold war.
The G model's were nuclear capable, had the wiring installed but no black boxs and we dont have nucs but you dont want that capability floating around in the wild so to speak. Reverse engineering can tell your opponent a lot, why make it easy for them by letting someone sell it to them.

I never understood why so much stuff was dumped at sea, rather than scrapped & recycled, especially in countries where the materials were sorely needed.
Heck - there's a huge area of not particularly deep seabed not 40 miles from here where they dumped tens of thousands of tons of bombs, artillery shells, propellant & every kind of explosive ordnance you can imagine.
Most is lying there, with some dumped in even shallower water, presumably on the "we're out of sight, so let's dump it & get home" principle.
Led to some frights when they were surveying the route for a new undersea cable a few years back.
