|
Okay went out today with my 7mm rem mag with my first load development.
Norma casses
ELD-X 175gr tips
361 powder
Loaded the following
62gr
62.5gr
63gr
63.5gr
64gr
I got speeds ranging from 2850FPS to 3250FPS
Is this to much or is it to low
What are your preferred speeds with a 7mm Rem Mag
Got my best grouping with the 63 and 64Gr loads

That velocity sounds a bit high for the bullet weight but I am unfamiliar with the powder type so I could be wrong. Velocities in my manuals top off at 3000 fps for the maximum listed loads. None of my manuals list your powder so what do your books tell you?

I have a hornady reloading book that gives you all the different loads for different points
the book i have is a bit old and does not have the loading data for 175gr ELD-X points, so i went with what they gave on another 175gr tips data
in there they used a different powder ( cannot remember exactly which it was)
the speeds they indicated there was a bit lower ranging from 2700 to max 2900
the powder is is localy manufatured in South Africa, have been using the same powder in my 30-06 and i have that one on its best at about 2500FPS
with the current speeds i am getting fro the 7mm the primers look good i cannot see any indication that the load is to hot which just tells me that i can still go a bit faster
But thanks guys, i will keep you posted as i continue oad development
currently best grouping at 100m was one inch
Remington guarantees a 3/4 group so if i get that i will be very happy
Cheers guys

400 extra fps from 2 grns of powder in large capacity case........
if you have good grouping at 63-64grns....go with that and be happy. pushing for the last fps is only going to end in tears....particularly if you out on stinking hot day,the load will be waay hotter than during testing.
at end of day its your rifle and your face next to it when you pull trigger.
pretty sure some folks getting really random pressures with the new eld range so as always it pays to start low n work up.....

Should have added my .02 cents, opinion
Looks like the load you're working on may be a little on the high side , maybe back off too the 2800 fps range for longer barrel and case life ....
After reading their site , they have a good powder and ammo history ,,,,,

Grouping is very good with this load and my 175Gr ELDX points
