Is that using a smart phone Slim? If so, is through a simple App or do you need some particular software or subscription to a carrier?

Vince, InReach is a device sold by Garmin.

explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/

It requires the purchase of a handheld device and a subscription ($11/mo). The device has the needed capability to connect to the satellite constellation.

OK...thanks Slim. My shooting buddy takes his Sat Phone and HF radio out when we go...he has no problems getting out. I just enjoy the break away from my phone.

It's easier, less expensive, and more effective to use InReach. Unless you have GPS integrated into the sat phone, its hard to communicate where you are.

Enjoy yourself Dallan. Some of the best times I have spent hunting has been solo. Just me, the bush and God. Needless to say the company is good.

Hunting Grouse Susan and I.

Hunting Ungulates - Alone in my hide - Weather dependent. I setup a 14' X 16' tent in a remote area accessible by walking a long way or quad. Susan and I pack in the materials, I stay, she goes back to the truck and trailer and goes home.

Question:Cell phones allow an emergency call when no SIM card in place. I'm concluding this is possible from the embedded GPS. With no service available in remote areas would an emergency call be possible from the embedded GPS?

I dont think so Frak, with no service to uplink to you cant place a call. You are correct that you can make 911 calls without a sim card if there is otherwise service available.

I miss the old "dual band" digital / analog phones, my old LG VX8300 flip phone would get signals in amazingly remote places. Heck my dad had one of the first "Brick phones" that was like 5 Watt of power. He'd get phone calls out in the west utah desert... in the 1980s. My dad really only ever had two tools... a truck and a working phone. That got him all work he ever needed.

I do remember the first "Brick Phones". Was servicing, as a contractor in the 80s, photo processors. A business acquaintance and I were in a restaurant when I heard a phone ring, the entire restaurant heard the phone ring, and Tim pulled up the "Brick". Yes, 5 Watts of blistering power. Razz

Sorting through old hardware and checked out my Nikon FE2 35.mm camera, lenses and assortment of attachments. Times have changed. My Binocs though still work as they did back in the day

over here a triple 1 call will use whatever cellphone towers it can find reguardless of which telco they belong to,it will even use the military ones if need be.....an epirb/plb will go direct to satalite...as will a sat phone..
there are GPS units out there that allow you to send a couple of simple messages to another place (not sure if thats a phone or computer that recieves it) also units that will ping you on a map so Mum can see where you are at.

Became motivated to answer my own question. GPS is NOT used for emergency calls.
The explanation:
Emergency calls can be made on any mobile phone network, not just your own. If you are somewhere where your network doesn't have reception but another does, you get Emergency Calls only. If no networks have any signal, you'll be told there is no reception.
Technically saying your mobile don't need SIM to make calls, but restricted only for Emergency calls. "SIM is used only to carry your phone number and carrier info, but not to receive signal".
And so Emergency call service centers can't call you back because they need your number to track you back.

Android Cell Phones can be tracked by using www.Android.com/Find providing your computer is logged into the users GOOGLE account.

I researched the Samsung S7 I currently use. This device uses A-GPS (assisted-GPS from your carrier), and GLONASS (Russian Based navigation system).
Providing the cell towers are in communication I can be located with A-GPS.

Next step is to pull the SIM, simulating no cell tower coverage, to identify location.

I usually go for 12 days. The party size varies from 3 to 7. Usually there are a couple days there when I am alone, but everybody knows the general area I will be in. On the days I am alone I don't hunt overly hard. You never know when something could take a turn for the worst.
