Reminds me of when I bought my first .45-70. My Grandfather said "Good lord! If you shoot a deer with that it will go straight through and set the woods on fire on the other side!"

Well, a 45-70 from an antique or replica has a muzzle velocity about twice what a 45 ACP and less than twice the velocity of an equivalent 45 Colt. There is no reason to feel over-gunned with that rifle when it is approximately equal to a 454 Casull handgun.
The 45-70 is a valid deer gun and maybe for elk within the proper range. It could even be used on moose but I would rather have a 3006 because the point blank range of the 45-70 is much closer than the 3006. Both guns are capable of killing a bison but the old '06 can do it from farther away.
Over gunned, not at all.
