1.383" will give you plenty enough space to make up mild .410 load ....or not so mild if that way tickles your fancy. you have more than enough space for powder ,wad and shot charge load, topped off with felt or card wad glued/nail varnished in place.... it would be interesting to see how much 0 or 00 buck you could cram into that case on top of a load of lilgun or 296....... after all you are after multiple hits with enough ooomph to penertrate at close range.....
nothing to loose and a heck of a lot of fun to be gained....

8O You guys talk about big bore rifles-but you missed on the really big bore pistol categories!I once hunted south east AK-when I was younger and after some close quarters in the bush on the south east island I concluded that I needed a 3.5 inch rocket launcher or something equal!Brown bears are LARGER grizzlies! Now for today I hear of the 45-70,and it is a fine round. It is also made in a pistol-magnum research comes to mind.5 shot single action with(I believe)7.5 inch and 10 inch barrel models. Now if a 350-600 grain 45 caliber bullet isn't enough for a backup handgun-then you must be hunting
dinosaurs. And you can carry a rifle and a pistol and use the same ammo in either! Very Happy

We had a club member at my old gun club that would show up every couple weeks with a T/C frame(forget which one) and a 45-70 pistol barrel. It was scoped and 1/2 MOA accurate, but he could usually only put 10-12 rounds down range before he quit.

Now I have it...how the heck do I carry it...

Originally, I figured I’d find a holster (Galco makes one) and carry it crossdraw. So I pulled out my pack to see if that would work. Unless I figure out a way to attach a holster to the pack, the straps that go around my gut won’t allow that to happen. Same goes for the day pack I use the most. It’s basically a fanny pack with shoulder straps that can fold out to a full pack if extra room is needed. I thought about a shoulder rig, but while I had all that stuff out, I threw on my Binos and realized that I might not have access to the gun if I need it in a hurry.

Slim got me to thinking about some sort of a drop leg rig that maybe I could modify to accept the Ruger, so online I went. I found a guy right here in town that makes a drop leg unit specifically for the Ruger Alaskans.

Oh, with a barrel that short, you may need to wear sunglasses when you shoot it!

I’m looking at upgrading the sights on this thing. It seems as if the best night sight(s) I can find are from XS Sights...

www.xssights.com/Produ...x?CAT=8350

They produce a “standard” dot front and a “big” dot. I’ve read about the plus’s and minuses of both, but given the intended purpose of this particular gun, I’m leaning toward toward the bigger front dot, thinking that if it’s needed in a SHTF situation, I’m gonna want to find that front sight in a hurry and get some shots fired.

Am I thinking about this correctly?

Are there things I should be considering that haven’t occurred to me yet?

I put a HiViz on my Redhawk. They now have "luminous" fiber optics to improve low light use. I haven't tried those yet.

YMMV!

Boomer on the left....for hunting.

Alaskan (Junior) 44m on the right....for back up. With a Sourdough Pancake from the Master Rob, when he was still in Alaska (fitting, eh?)

Why not the 454?
I cannot control the 454- at all!

I can drill 2 or 3 well placed shots of some pretty hot hard-cast 44m that (if placed, and it will kill *it*- GAIR-N-TEED), faster than I can do one well placed hit with the 454.

Plus, if I ever shot the 454 w/o cans I'd be stone-deaf forever, it's just too much gun for me (thought I'd never say that!). The 44m if loaded right is plenty. And, I practice with it a LOT. Pie plate, 5 yards, bear drills.

The Alaskan goes with me whenever I go on walkies. It's got a great trigger, too, out of the box.

Hi Papa Joe! Hope yer doin' it to it man and enjoyin' that snubby!

And, hat's off to ya for ponying up with the 454. When I got the 44 Alaskan, I had a chance to shoot all 3, the 454, 480, 44. I started with the 44 and some 240gr jhp SAMI standard loads. Impressive and a LOT of fun indoors, you like attention? Get one, go to the indoor range. The 480 was an eye-opener- for whatever reason, that load went the way of the Dino. But the 454 in that little package? Juheeeezus! Hahahaha. I handed it back to the RM with this look on my face- the RM was just laughing. Now THAT'S a bear gun! Hahahaha.

Short of a stubby 12ga pump with slugs in the Bush, I do like the Alaskan in all it's calibers. It's tiny, SO easy to carry, great trigger, and boy, howdy, does kitty got claws. I've also shot some impromptu run-n-gun roller-only stages with it, with slightly sub-loaded stuff of course. They won't let me use the BB hardcast +P stuff on the steel. Hahahaha. Plus Simply Rugged makes a Chesty Puller front mount kit for my pancake for mud n deep stuff so your rig stays clean. I HIGHLY recommend Rob @ Simply Rugged for the best leather.

And- where's Wiersey with that holy-crap hog-leg BFR??? He's had a huge mongo-roller longer than any of us I think?

WIERSEY- front and center boy!

Here's my pancake for the Alaskan. Awesome. Got two. One at home with a Chesty Puller rig for cross-chest carry. This one goes on a Wilderness belt, but I like the puller rig a lot better so I wear that one more. I got a BUNCH of his leather. It's the BEST, hands down. I got all my goods a while back, while he was still in Alaska- so yeh, these are special. Alaskan Holster, Alaskan bear gun.
