I received the Wheeler kit a couple days ago, and it got me to thinking about one other issue.

Once the rings are lapped, how do you treat the new raw surface?

In my case, using Talley rings, which are a "high strength aluminum alloy", it may not be a huge issue, but what about steel rings, which have had the finish removed and could be susceptible to rust???

I suppose you could take them to someone and have them powder coated, or another option is a light EVEN coat of a rust preventative paint like Killrust or similar. Not sure about the qualities of silicone, but maybe a coat of a silicone grease or similar might protect the bare steel.

Then again, you could get real flash and have the insides gold plated. I remember a few years back there was a kit available that was actually designed for car badges or tap handles etc that the home handyman could buy and use...it laid a couple of microns of gold on the surface. Gold doesn't rust.

I was thinking something along the lines of a cold blue:

www.brownells.com/guns...d1108.aspx

I don't know if it's necessary but wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone had thoughts about it.

It's definitely an option HJ, but I'm not sure it will prevent rust on the steel though mate. For real rust prevention you need a coating that 'seals' the steel away from any moisture.

That's the way Rachel...keep Dad honest mate, and don't be afraid to give him advice when you think it is necessary mate. Wink Wink Very Happy Very Happy Cool

I have a them on some of my stuff. Once they're set they never move. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I have always installed the with the screws on differing sides, it seems to help with keeping everything lined up. Who knows, maybe I've already ruined a scope for use on a different rifle, but they work so far.

I have a Tasco 629a 3-9x32 scope. The adjustment rings are extremely hard to turn and I'm starting to carve out the adjustment slot. Is there some way to loosen the adjustment screws so that they are easier to turn?

try loosening scope rings and see if tension changes.....had an old redfield that wouldnt go last three powers up if rings were too close to one end.

I agree with Elvis, although loosening the rings can present its own problems. By my way of thinking, if loosening the rings ‘fixes’ the problem, then there are alignment issues with the mounts that needs addressing.

The scope rings for adjusting magnification and focus work fine. It is the left/right and up/down rings that are extremely hard to turn. I'm afraid to put any drops of anything into them for fear of it leaking into the scope.

Ok, rings are the things holding the scope to the rifle. Adjustments for up/down and right/left are called turrets. Please take this the right way, but Tasco is notorious for turrets sticking and binding. Today's Tasco scopes seem to be deteriorating in quality and durability when compared to 15-20 years ago. You would probably be money ahead to replace your scope with a different brand. Check out Optics Planet for a good selection of moderately priced scopes. Read the reviews for any that interest you. Many of the very cheap ones are unreliable and just junk. Bushnell, Weaver, Redfield and some Simmons would do you well without breaking the bank. Optics would be superior as well.
Again, I am not trying to be insulting, but you are better off replacing your scope.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check out the web site Optics Planet. Yes the scope was cheap. Wal-mart purchase 15 yrs ago. Mounted on an old .22 for my then 13 yr old son. Time for an upgrade.

Ok...I’m on net now myself. Single Shot has hit the nail squarely on the head...time for an upgrade...I reckon you have got your dollars worth out of that old scope mate.
