Just use the "hour glass" type of timer and what they do with minutes and hours won't matter.
As a point of information the Sumerians gave us the 7 day week, the 60 minute hour but had the day set up with 12 periods that were unequal. The 24 hour day was divided into day and night with each containing 6 periods. The period length changed with the seasons because as the day got longer the periods got longer during the day and shorter during the night. Since nobody actually used those periods to keep time it worked fine until other civilization switched to a 24 equal hour day. The sixty minute hour and sixty second minute was based on the 360 degree rotation of the earth with degrees, minutes and seconds. The earth actually rotates 15 degrees in each hour so our time zones are based on that.
