very interesting as always...have you had a look at a SWORD PEASANT KNIFE???? I picked one up and its a great piece of kit, the design would be very easy for a chap of your great skills to adapt to your advantage.

hehehe I picked mine up literally it was in a farm gateway I saw it and thought just bit of rubbish but next month when back in same place I picked it up....awesome steel in it, sure easy to keep sharp, interesting the maker says dont use a steel at all, just fine stone or ceramic rods.

Geland skins rabbits with a knife I would use to cut trees, so I think he likes to use such a small knife on deer (where you only have to cut some skin).

Another story is that one of his relatives ordered a knife to test some surgeon scales he might have... now as long as his name is not "Jack" and he's not a chinese copy of Jack-the-knife...

Lucky bugger!

Makers will tell you stuff to make you buy more.
Every time you use a stone on a knife, you take away some steel, thus the usefulness of the knife. Thus you will buy another one soon..
Using steel will straighten the burr on the knife, not remove them, thus your knife will last quite a bit longer (a few more decades if you do it right).

OTOH, usually on a Svord, usually the carbon steel are too hard and brittle (thus why they can retain their edge so well), using steel will broke the burr and left you with totally blunt flat (microscopically) edge that will be quite useless in a knife. So.. you use stone on them.. Lightly..
Or better yet, strop with very fine grit.

And your opinion of Arkansas and Washita stones for knife care?

I do not recommend using washita unless you are going to take away an edge chip. NoNo
And why is the edge chipped? Whip

HARD arkansas can be used for standard maintenance, lightly swipe rather than hard rub would work good.
Better to sharpen as soon as the knife feels dull rather than wait until it IS dull.

Personally I do not use stones.
I carry a short square hardwood stick with 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper stuck on them for re-profile, and leather with green compound for standard sharpening strop.
I also carry a short drill rod for steeling the edge.

Btw the dagger is done Smile

the Lansky two rod turn box knife sharpener I bought a year or two back sure takes care of the hard steel/stainless knives well
good old oilstone takes care of rest.

I sharpen using water stones, then 2000 grit oiled wet/dry glued to a pane of glass and finish with a strop. When carving roasts etc., I use a steel to bring up the edge. Water stones require frequent surface truing as they are soft but they give edge tools and knifes a razor edge I have never been able to duplicate with any other stone. Great blade geland! Anyone who traps for fur would appreciate such a tool.
