Not sure what the go is with the stabbings in Cairns as yet...the Police aren't releasing any details that I've heard. It appears the family involved is an Islander family (Torres Strait Island), so it is anyone's guess what instigated this terrible act.

As Dallan said, it is difficult to get your head around why people would do such a devastating thing to a family. Was it a murder suicide or a domestic violence related act...we don't know yet, but as a general rule, Torres Strait Islanders are usually very family orientated...family means everything to them. This leads me to think it could possibly have even been a "crime of passion". Whichever way, there is NO excuse for murdering children, especially babies of 10 months old.

As an aside; I used to live about 500 metres, as the crow flies, from where this happened. It is a low income area with quite a reasonably high indigenous and Islander demagraphic. Having said that, most people I encountered around the area were reasonably good...I only found a few that were less than agreeable.

I suppose the story will come out in due time, but it is a terrible thing to happen at any time, let alone this close to Christmas, which seems to make it just that much worse. My prayers and thoughts are with the remaining family members at this time.

Not a lot of speculating going on as would happen in the US, kinda nice that they're not gathering a lynch mob for someone. What a tragic thing to happen to youngsters, I hope the criminal gets his due. I always think of my own family and what would I do or think and I just have no ability to imagine, nor do I want to.

Terrible terrible terrible. I can't even begin to understand how the remaining siblings must feel. Christmas time will never hold anything but sorrow and sadness for these kids now.

As Gelan said, the mother of 7 of the 8 kids murdered has been arrested for the murders. I can't even imagine what would cause a mother to murder her children like this.

I haven't heard any of that on the news yet mate, but then again I've been busier than a one legged man in an arse kicking contest. It wouldn't surprise me though mate as that part of Manoora is a low income/welfare recipient area.
