I'm trying to work up a load for my better half's uncle's 30/30 with the 160gr Hornady FTX bullet. Does anyone have the Hornady reloading handbook that gives this info? I have lots of reloading manuals, but none of them list these new bullets. (Nor are they in the point blank database for that matter) Anyone able to help me with a scan of that page or something?

Enter Hogdon Reloading Data into your search engine. Click on Hogdon Reloading/ home and follow the map.

Enter the info for a 160 grain bullet and you will have your answer.

Peronally I prefer 32 grains of W-748 under a 170 grain Speer Hotcore FN, but...

Grant...consider looking at Varget and Benchmark 8208 as well mate. Both these powders work very well in my 30.30 Model 94.

I think the leverlutions use a special powder not available to us mere mortals...pretty hotly loaded going by point of impact.

I really like the performance of the 325 gr FTX in my 45/70, both at the range and at knocking down Elk, flatter shooting and great groups. That is why I thought top use the FTX in this 30/30 to see if we could get a little better performance. The Hornady ballistics on their own ammo might be a wee tad on the high side me thinks. They claim 2400+ fps, but I can't find any reloading info that shows the same type of performance.

Vince... I'm going to try IMR4064, that's what I use in mine loading 150gr sierra's with good results. I stick with IMR for all my reloading so far. I always seem to get great results with that brand so it boils down to, "If it ain't broke.......".

Grant, I'd give CFE223 and Leverevolution a try. I've been using CFE in my 6.8 and have found the velocity std deviation next to nothing and the Hodgdon loading data shows 200 to 300 fps more with these powders. 200 fps is like stepping up to a "magnum". I may have to try some LVR if I can find some.

That makes sense to me mate...in a firm believer in the same adage.

Ok so I am going to put in my two cents worth since I have duplicated the original recipe per Hornadys help and I have the 8th edition manual which has a different recipe that Hornady claims is what is used for lever-evolution ammo now. I will dig it up if you would like grant but the ammo originally produced by Hornady for the 30-30 lever-evolution now uses different (and has for quite sometime) powder then it originally was manufactured with. To be honest if you want sound advice on anything 30-30 I would say listen to Bushy up there, he has provided me with some great information however as I said if you want I will dig up both reloading recipes from Hornady for you.

tlo7mm, I'd be interested in any new recipe information you have.

Hornady's 30-30 loading using the 160gr Hornady FTX bullet, has a advertised muzzle velocity of 2,317 fps. The Hornady 8th Edition lists LeveRevolution powder as the only one that hits that mark.

for the Hornady 160gr FTX bullet (#30395) using LeveRevolution powder:
C.O.L.: 2.535"

a starting load of: 27.7 grs will get you 1900 fps

MAXIMUM LOAD 37.0 grs = 2300 fps

I would be careful working up the load to maximum. Go slow!
