I think I would bed the action lug and as much of the rest of the action including the upper tang, just to make sure everything is in contact. In the end it's sort of insurance of even distribution of recoil forces and less stress on the stock. Just my opinion but I've been doin that to all my wood rifle stocks.

Some guys are hitting 4000 fps with the Nosler 55 BT.

I called BS until I saw 3900+ on my chrono with loads that gave hard bolt lift. I backed off a grain to get 3750 and sub MOA group. Win/Win.

I can run a 75 V-max about 3400. I have some 65 Vmax that I would expect 3550 to 3600 out of.

havent you guys heard of a 22-250???

and Im married with teenagers so number of tools is limited by $$$$
if I had to go down to only one rifle the .223 would win.

I think the 223 would be near the bottom of my list but above the SKS. It would be hard for me to choose just one gun - the 30-06 was my dad's and the first rifle I ever shot. My 358 Winchester will do most anything the 30-06 will do but with bigger bullets and I really like the two 257 Roberts because they are easy to shoot - get better range than the 30-06 but with smaller bullets - limits the size of animal one can hunt without limiting your use to head and kneck shots. The 30-30 is a staple but not one of the top five.

I'll just keep them all until it is time for me to go. I can decide then who gets which and which one will be buried with me - just in case the after life isn't as safe as we believe it is. Smile

Paul, I'm with you on this one. Only 1 gun is for dumb sissys with a small memory that can only store 1 bullettraject... although getting older doesn't help the memory, but even then it's fine to be able to chose a rifle of which you remember the traject... when you can remember where you put that rifle...

I still love the challenge of doing the same thing but with different equipment... it's a kind of feeling young and not-maried again... Smile

I have a different point of view on guys with just one gun; and you don't want to call them sissies. They can usually do everything with just the one.

I don't have one gun but work on the maximum point blank method. All my rifles are sighted to this so I really don't worry much about trajectory. My mil-dot scope on the. 223 I use for ranging as the target on a coyote is pretty small and estimating range with the naked eye is not a skill I have been able to develop. Other scopes, I have a mental image of what an 18 inch target at 300 yards looks like at max magnification. This was how I learned to estimate range looking through the battle sight of a FAL. Others used the front post but the idea is the same.

For many years I had one centrefire rifle, a 30-06. I fired everything from 100 to 220 grain bullets with it and found no reason to complain.

In the final analysis it is what and where you hunt that should dictate calibre. Unfortunately, new hands and the occasional old vet get distracted by the new and shiny. Hunting writers, who get all sorts of free things from firearm makers, seem bound and detetmined to raise minimum calibre recommendations. No one told the game they were harder to kill.

I just love them all. From the .22 short, L & LR, .22 WMR, .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, 6mm Rem, 6,5x54 MS, 7x57, 7x57R, 7x64, .280 Rem, 7 mm RM, .357 RM, 30/30 Win, .308 Win, .300 WM, .375 H&H, 45-70 till the .45 muzzle loaders. I see I forgot the 458 Win Mag...

And the funny thing? Still missing a .30 M1 (have 1 but not my own) and a 30-06, because I agree with Mac: when you only have one rifle, it should be something in .308 and the 30-06 is possibly the best choise. Unless you are a .375 H&H addict, because that's even more versatile.

It is restricted. You need a license for every gun and live like a saint or you loose everything. There are special licenses for collectors, but collectors are not allowed to shoot with their guns (or only once a year to test they are still operational). And then there are others who like to shoot with all they have. Or even like to hunt. What's wrong when you like the challenge of using extremes? I like to shoot roedeer with a .22 Hornet (but I'm not allowed to try that in MY country). But in my country I'm allowed to shoot a rabbit with a .375 H&H and doing so and still harvest something to eat, that's a challenge. You can hunt over extreme distances and with all the people, cars and houses in my small country, that's quite impossible over here.
I've done roedeer here with almost everything I have from the .222 Rem up with a few exceptions: the 280 Rem (because that's a Woodmaster and I still don't like its groupesize), the 7x64 (because too many hunters already use that caliber), the Marlin in .357 RM (because I doesn't reache the legally required energy limit), the 45-70 (because that's a Lyman centennial edition Ruger #1) and the .458 Win Mag (because there's a 7 mm RM in its stock now that's doing far better than expected).

And no, I still didn't try that rabbit with the .375 H&H Smile

but if you want a load to shoot a roebuck with little meatlosses using this caliber... (the 200 gr Sierra and some .44 RM powder are the way to go)

A man has to do what he has to do and some love very strange things... Smile

but at the end, when we both are feeling happy and nobody is hurt...

And don't forget there's always a sword hanging above my head. You all are right: it starts with registration and afterwards or they try to steal it or they try to tax it + you always risk an extra punishment when you're caught on breaking some laws.

Suppose I should start to divorce, just my wife's word is enough to get all my toys stored at the policestation or in a independent gunshop or so.

But one of the advantages of getting old is that you're allowed to talk about more things you would never dare to say when you were still young Smile

Well - the Syrac adjustable gas block is installed, the Nikko Mil dot scope is fairly zeroed... time to do an OCW work up.

Slim - do you set the gas off and single shot it for load development or do you pick the mild setting that cycles the bolt reliably with a moderate load and leave it there?
