Ive managed to stave off the dreaded "Duck fever" untill today,
its only a few weeks till opening (1st sat in may)
this morning I was spreading fertiliser on a farm I hadnt done before...drains everywhere, big wide open ones with raupo and reeds growing around the edges and the water was filled with BIG FAT MALLARDS ,white swans(protected) black swans (fair game) pukekos (swamp hens) and every thing else its a wonder/miracle I didnt prang truck or drive it into a ditch I didnt know where to look
managed to get it all sown and the farmer came over to see me
a good fella he is too, we had a chat and it gets shot opening weekend but not much after and YES YES YES YES YES I am allowed to give him a ring and go down to shoot the place and he is happy for me to dog it the week after opening to say Im stoked is an understatement
oh yeah and the next place I went to has 50 odd paradise ducks eating the new grass and Im allowed to go after them too..WOOHOOO

I am green with envy! It is still sonowing up here and I am already starting to plan my duck hunting year. Some friends and I are going to hit North Dakota this fall so I am chomping at the bit.

went out today and had a look at pond we built a month or so back with a digger. its filled nicely as we have had over 6" of rain so far this week and still persisting down. the pond hasnt completely sealed yet and no ducks seen but thats ok we knew it was a long term goal. drove around and saw a dozen or so parries in pairs and a few mallards just to get juices flowing.
the lake we shoot is fulling up nicely so with any luck we will not have mud to contend with and will be able to sit in tree line to shoot.

hope to get up to lake this month to snavel a few trout before season ends...might sneak shottie in just in case geese dumb enough to let me get in range.....water level looks to be chocker block in the lake (we can check it online) raining again here this arvo so its wetter than a shag going fishing.

had a crappy day at work...just couldnt get in the mood.
but the good news is I dont go back till 11th May..opening day is the 3rd..so time to do chores around home (yeah right) get gear sorted out for the big day and maybe catch a fish or 3 and may even squeeze in a hunt for something bigger.

got up to lake and yippee the water level is primo!!!!
managed to catch a couple of brown trout and tin arsed Nathan managed to get a brown and a rainbow (I released the rainbows a few years back)
and the hunting gods were shining on me too as the resident Canadian geese let me get close enough in dingy to swat one out of the sky as they took off and spotted a 2nd winged bird so got that aswell
fed out our bag of barley and came home happy
