Little update on Augie Dawg - He is deployed with the 3/8 USMC in Sigonella Naval Air Station in Sigonella Sicily. He is actually a reservist but they gave him a one year active duty contract and he is making the most of it. He started at Camp Lejeune last July and has had some great experiences as a platoon leader and as a member of the battalion staff in the planning S3 shop. He got to use his Poly Sci degree in Monrovia Liberia last month.

I got to Facetime with him yesterday and he shared a funny story. During his boat ride down to Liberia last month the Atlantic MEU was in port at Rota Spain. Our lowly 2nd Lt. was the highest ranking Marine officer on the water in the Atlantic Fleet for a few days. The entire battalion HQ from the Generals to the Majors and Captains have been razzing John and calling him The Commodore. They are referring to his team non-com leaders as Cabin Boy and Gilligan. Someone had Photoshopped Johns face onto the Russell Crowe body from the movie Master and Commander and put it on Johns desk in Sigonella Siciliy.
His next training mission....

Between the sea sickness on the boat to Liberia, 120 degree heat and the dysentery from the native food in Chad, John has gone from 195 to 177 pounds on this deployment. Hopefully he can beef up a bit before they send him out again. He should have at least one more mission with his team before he returns to Lejeune in early August.

He said he wants to take his bow and go back for the water buffalo that charged his truck.

Damn peace time Marines get all the glory. A proud Father he will make of you.
