458 Lott in a CZ 550 on the left is a 750 grain beast and the right is the tried and true Lyman 462560

You gotta straighten those gas checks out if you want to go squirrel huntin' with them. You're right about an elephant load... What's the alloy?

Okay gang...update regarding a 338 win mag for deer. I did change the stock out for unknown ( only my gun smith knows @ the moment ) what brand of rubber type stock he fitted my works into but gotta tell you, I tried it out with 185gr Hornadys GMX...result is now in my opinion it has the recoil falling between a 243 and a 6.5x55.....super sweet for a past bruising 338. Can shoot it all day long recoil wise but still need ear protection from the report. So there it is...a 338 win mag that stops deer right now. Now to dial in the sweet spot but already off to a good start.

Happy New Year everyone!!!
John

Ruger m77 MKll 243 / bought new 15 years ago / 2 rnds fired to see recoil.
Ruger m77 Hawkeye / 270 / 3 years old / unfired at this time.
Mauser 98 modern custom build 6.5x55 / 3 years old / approx. 100 rnds fired / have harvested many deer and black bear.
Mauser 98 modern custom build 7x57 / 2 years old / 1 rnd fired to test.
Ruger m77 mkll / 338 win mag / customizing & in progress.
Carl Gustaf 1899 - 6.5x55 / excellent cond / dismantelled for total clean & thorough exam / expect to hunt again soon.
German pellet rifle / one cock at 1630 ips.
That's half of the round-up here...just enough to keep the freezer full and great meals throughout the year.

So your able to create a album of sorts to take an attachment from when needed? I'm not forum savvy when it comes to albums & pics. The size you made mine was what I would have preferred the size to be however I didn't see a sizing option here and adobe is in the computer that's not compatible with this one. Thanks Omini for the link and info.

Thanks Suz and Happy New Year! Hope this one is better than the last.

This collection is what's left from some 27 rifles I bought over a span of 40 years. When I realized I really only prefer deer, elk and javalina, I saw how crazy it was to tie up all those $ in "more stuff". It was starting to look like a museum.

I am fairly new to 98's but have noticed in a mysterious way, those mausers including the gustaf seem to stand above the rest of what's left of the commercial stuff here. The rugers look pretty in the field while the mausers are at work in a serious way and feel. The modern 6.5 was built by a 30 year smith for himself who is a advid hunter. He's the kind that his family doesn't see from season opening till it's all over when he returns home with a truckload of meat. He dialed that 6.5 in to put 5 shots through the same hole @ 100 yds. I was so impressed with it after seeing for myself, I had him blueprint the 7x57 up to the point where I could finish it. In the end, I believe the 6.5, 7x57 and 338 tuned down will be the only ones I'd care to work with.

I read your working on a rolling block. Did you finish it?

Im a .270 man...before that I had a 94 30/30
both are plurry great rifles. the 30/30 has few equals for fast shooting in tight brush situations and the .270 made its reputation back in the days before range finders were common as a person using one with good fast 130grain loads was pretty much certain of a telling hit on a deer sized animal out to 400yards. when hit..they stayed hit.

lever guns are way cool , fast and natural pointers

Jack O'Connor , one of the heroes of my youth , single handedly , put the .270 on the map as a great shooter
