Hopefully not 10Ring :(.

I dont think they would even dare tell us we lost our term. Its for most anyways the 2nd term of the year if they started in September or there last if they started last September. Smile

IF your like me you started in January so this is your first term Very Happy

Anyways there are 150,000 students that are seriously going to be pissed we lost a couple of thousands and wont be able to finish if they are to graduate Smile

Colleges are going to have "contingacy plans" running soon to make sure we finish on time. So strike or not strike I'll be back to school soon Very Happy

A simular event happened here upon which students were allowed to "make up" lost time for credit hours. That though took up 2 more months of cramming and sleepless nights where students had a 33% failure rate Neutral I hope you are better off and you should find out before a possible suprise Shocked

College classes could resume Monday
Strike will end with arbitration
Students missed almost 3 weeks
Mar. 25, 2006. 05:21 AM
DANIEL GIRARD
EDUCATION REPORTER

More than 150,000 Ontario college students will be back in class as early as Monday after a deal late last night to end an 18-day-old teachers strike.

"This is great news for our students and for our faculty," Joy Warkentin, chair of the bargaining committee for the province's 24 colleges, said in an interview. "The strike is over and everybody wants to be back in the classroom.

"About 9,100 teachers, counsellors and librarians, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, walked off the job on March 7 in a dispute over class size and workload, shutting classrooms at a vital time in the academic year.

"This is fantastic news," said Tyler Charlebois of the College Student Alliance. "Students are thrilled we're finally getting good news after all this time.

"All students ever asked was to get the education that they paid for," he said. "This strike should never have happened, but at least the end is now in sight.

"As the strike dragged on, students feared they would lose their semester and, in some cases, have their graduation delayed. Both sides were offering assurances last night that they will get the lessons they need to complete their studies.

"I'm expecting on Monday it will be back to regular classes," said Ted Montgomery, head of OPSEU's bargaining committee. "We'll let the colleges work out the make-up schemes and co-operate to meet the needs of students.

"Montgomery said he did not expect the semester would need to be pushed back much, if at all.

"We'll be able to make up for the losses," he said. "The sacrifices will be small enough that the integrity of students' education will be maintained.

"Warkentin said individual colleges have been working throughout the strike on a plan to make up for lost time and that will vary by school.

"Students have missed three weeks, but we'll make sure they get their work in," she said.

Students are being urged to check the websites of their college for specific details on when classes are going to resume.

Earlier this week, the two sides agreed that they could not reach a negotiated settlement and would need a third party to arbitrate. But they also remained divided over what form that arbitration would take, prompting Colleges and Universities Minister Chris Bentley on Thursday to ask Kevin Whitaker, chair of the provincially-appointed College Relations Commission, to end that impasse.

Just before 10 last night, OPSEU and the colleges announced they had agreed to send their outstanding issues to mediation-arbitration. It will be handled by well-known labour relations expert William Kaplan.

Earlier yesterday, Premier Dalton McGuinty told reporters in Mississauga "there is no legitimate reason" for students to not be in class on Monday, especially after the two sides had agreed that they would need a third party to settle the dispute.

"I'm asking both sides to work together and make that happen," he said. "If they are truly committed to improving the quality of education for our young people then quality begins with being present in the classroom Monday morning.

"Kaplan will mediate and arbitrate on the key issues of the strike — salaries, workload and class sizes.

OPSEU insisted throughout the strike, the first by college faculty since 1989, that its aim was "to improve the quality of education" to students in the system. It equated that with the colleges hiring more full-time staff to reduce class sizes and lower the student-teacher ratio.

It said its proposals would cost the colleges about $75 million to $90 million.

But the colleges countered that the true cost of the union's demands ranged from $150 million to more than $200 million. Not only was it too rich, but they also argued that other priorities — upgraded equipment, new books and improved infrastructure — were also key components of improved education.

I guess this thread is over now Very Happy
