Folks,
The local gunsmith rebarreled an M1 Garand for a fellow who wanted a classic rifle from WWII like his father carried in Europe. The guy was an ex-policeman and is now a salesman working in New York City. He needed some instruction and I spent a few hours this afternoon helping him get his rifle sighted in. The fellow was an avid student and shot very well with military CMP ball ammo. He has agreed to shoot his M1 Garand next weekend in our first National Match Course event. I like it when a story has a happy ending. We need to recruit more like-minded folks into the shooting and collecting arena with us. All the best...

I have a weak spot for the M1 Garand.I always wanted one so last march I drove out to Camp Perry and picked out a Springfield service grade rifle from the CMP store. Receiver manufactured in june of '43,a year before D-Day. I took the rifle to the counter to purchase and the man working the counter said"your not superstitious are you ?",the serial number was 1666xxx. I said hopefully all the bad luck had been used up on the enemy! It shoots great, have no trouble busting gallon jugs shooting from field positions past 200 yards. They are a sweet shooting rifle.I plan on going out to Camp Perry again to pick out another(or two) sometime.

If you qualify the CMP price is great! I love mine, got it and a new stock and hand gaurds as well in February.
Alot of folks at the club Whine and cry because they cant get a CMP rifle, I told them to sign up for a couple local matches and barrow a rifle. How hard is that?

Crackshot,
Good point. Just about anyone can shoot in our matches. They do not have to be club members or NRA members. These events are open to the public. Shoot one match and you qualify as a competitor. We have had folks show up that have never fired a gun and shot the match and scored. All the best...

I still own and shoot seven US M1 Rifles. I carried one with the 2nd AD, from Feb '61 until Sept. '63, when we were issued the M14. It is no wonder that some M1 Rifles come out of the Arsenal with poor bores. Many troops sat around sawing the steel cleaning rod in and out of the muzzle until the bore glistened bright for inspection, with no thought of coning the muzzle. Ordance came to our arms room on occasion, and picked up all the rifles with bores out of shape bad enough to throw end over end bullets that went through the target sideways, if at all.
I had the privilege of judging bird dogs in Ogre's beautiful Australia in 1998. Over five weeks I stayed in various parts of OZ and saw, first hand what the draconian gun laws had done to hunting there. If only every firearms owner in the US could really understand what happened in OZ, they'd all write letters, vote and join NRA.

G'Day roysclockgun. Mate, sounds like the same guys trained some of our soldiers as trained yours. Cleanliness was uppermost in the inspecting officers eyes. Didn't matter how it shot, so long as it was clean !!

You hit the nail squarely on the head with our gun laws.....draconian doesn't do them "justice". Mad Mad

I implore all shooters in the US to do exactly as you have suggested, and don't let the "gun grabbers" anywhere near the area where they can have ANY input to gun laws and firearm ownership. Remember....its the squeeky wheel that gets the grease.....make sure you are heard over the "gun grabbers".

Cheers, Vince
