I guess the question here is based upon ethics and why? I used to have one, even loved the way it shot.....but to hunt with it, other than being in Africa, it just seems to be of a macho esque manner, and i can because i can, kind of thing.
Don't mean to put your aquantince down but i'd just like to know why and what reason a 50BMG is used?.....other than taking 1500 and plus yard shots?

They are illegal to hunt with in Idaho I believe... actually I think the restriction is weight based, anything over 30lbs is illegal. I guess some long range people were tipping over elk and whatnot at 1500 meters so they imposed the weight restriction to limit benchrest rifles.

One of my 50's was only 22lbs. i think all the semi's get over 30 though. Anywho.... yeah, i can honestly see how people can pop elk at 1500 meters when usually a seasoned shooter can take the rifle to 2000 meters+.

Not sure why he used the gun for Elk hunting, He uses the rifle for long range target work and goes some where out west to shoot Dynomite or some such crazy thing, any way I have one on layaway at work(Serbu) and will have payed off next month. , have a new reloading press and dies for it already here(hold on to your wallet boy's ) as well as the powder from Hodgdon.

I think you'll really enjoy shooting it and Serbu is a good selection.
I've found the Barnes Solid in the 750 gr persuasion to be a fine round backed with AA 8700 at 216 grains but even with the brake, it will thump you pretty hard. I have also loaded (but can't remember the data) Barnes X at 647gr, with AA 8700 and i had that round smokin over 2900fps which this load was great in my S-A's but the 750 wasn't for some reason....... 750 most accurate in the BA though.

I cant wait! , I am alittle excited by the prospect of touching off that much horse power . I have went in with a friend and leased a piece of property that has a 3/4 mile lane with a huge pile of dirt at the end, the owner used to sight in his slug guns. If 3/4 of a mile aint enough to practice with then i better give up.

50BMG....mmmmmmm. Used to love firing the .30/.50 combo mounted on my M113A1 APC when I was in the Australian Army ....did wonders for me....and the missus when I got home woo hoo
Some years agoI used to buy the American Handgunner magazine and I remember seeing a .50BMG single shot pistol built on the .45ACP frame. From memory it was in Hawaii.......now that would have been one very scary piece to bust a cap on!
Used to be able to buy the .50 Boyes Anti Tank Rifle and ammo out here in Australia, but like all things that are even remotely fun or enjoyable the govt has banned them!
Cheers, Vince
