That looks like a leg snare used for bears although it looks a bit lightweight. Smaller snares of this variety were also used for lynx. The slide locks on the wire when the snare draws tight. Snared bears and lynx will not pull frantically when snared in this manner. Snares are preferable to leg hold traps which are now banned.
The snares I use are for rabbits. They also lock when the snare draws tight as the wire crimps in the twisted loop that forms the slide.
Here are a couple of videos that show the general technique.

its funny to me that snares are illegal here(with a few exceptions) bt that theyre preffered in canada where mac is??? is this just the different tree huggers were drinking a different brand of bottled water in different locales or is there a good reason for this?

i grew up in bushmasters neck of the woods in the late '60s and early '70s.
So id be ashamed to tell some of the "trapping" techniques i was taught as a boy. most were far from humane, but i gotta say they were real effective

my old traps have been retired as the great guys from DOC have lent me 11 of there Doc250 traps to use and man are those huas a naasty piece of work!!! any rat/ferret/stoat/weasel/hedgehog that steps on the plate will be flattened literally!!!!!
A little hard on the nerves setting them as the springs are very tight and would smash your arm to a pulp if you were dumb enough to get it wrong.

I only just found this thread.
Why can't you use gin traps, Just put them away off the ground. We used them as kids and with the price of fur I'm considering getting into it again on my days off. Looks like I'll have to buy Fenn traps though.
I'm not going down the Cyanide track, I've had too many scares with druggies baiting their plants and hides with the stuff.
Elvis, I should get down your way one day, its only a flight and a drive isn't it!

have a look on the net Radar you will see good old lanes aces are illegal to use as are most of the good traps we used as younguns!!!
trademe has sellers of legal leg hold traps and links to relavent regulations etc etc. I cant even set gin traps in boxes to catch vermin if I read the signs correctly, well Im not "supposed to" anyway.
chek out the BB brand of traps or the round double sprung jobs as they arent too pricey. saw 2 possoms up a willow tree tonight while checking the line... may just have to take the McPara moonbeam for a wee walkies this weekend.

Maybe a trap for the trap?
make sure you got your backside covered tho..
Some of the trap remover are greenie with thick and deep wallet.
Direct confrontation may cost you plenty of time and $$$ even if you are not in the fault.
Maybe a bucket of paint overhead could help.
Or even some glass fiber dust.. Yeah...
