Hey guys, thanks for letting me in the group. Im brand new to loading and have been hashing through past topics for days. I have found tons of greta info.
My question is on h414 powder. My buddy dumped some on me and from the research it's a great powder for the .243 (which is what Im loading for by the way.) the only problem I'm finding is the lack of load info for the 75g vmax. Not sure whether to use the load data from the 75g hp listed on the hodgdon reload sheet or not? I did find one load posted on line showing 45.5 gr, but thats it. Id like to do few different charges to experiment with, but being new to loading I dont want to make any mistakes.
One more question about the h414. Do I really need magnum primer being ball powder, or will standard primers work well?
Thanks for all your help in advance.

take a look here ht data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp
says 42 grain to start and 46 grain max load. Regular primers should be fine. Before I forget Welcome and enjoy your self

So your saying I will be ok using the hornady 75 grn hp in place of the vmax? I saw those numbers as well, but wasnt sure about it because they list the 65 grn vmax as vmax and not hp, which makes me believe the hp and vmax are two different animals all together???

My reloading manual doesn't even list what projectiles were used for their testing, just the weight of them.

my old hodgdon book lists a H414 powder with 47grns behind a 75grn projectile. no mention of primer type or what projectile just its weight. 3534fps is listed speed out of 26"barrel. I dont worry too much re what type projectile it is just its weight and go from there.

Data is from 48th edition Lyman's manual. Standard LR primers.

H414 is a real nice powder to work with. I used a 48 gr load with the 58 gr V max and it is a one hole shooter but got more velocty and similar accuracy out of 4064 and 8208. I do not use magnum primers but I do use the Federal Match primers.

I loaded some 75vmax with H414 close to a max load and was getting about 3350 fps, I went back to the 58's where I was getting closer to 3800 for a flatter , longer PBZ.

Start lower (42-43 grains) and work up towards 46 grains of course, but I had no pressure signs at the top end.

I've used a lot of H414 in my 6mm varmint loads.....always used Winchester WLR or Federal 210M (match) without issue !!!

It's always an option to try......just don't switch them assuming things will be ok.
As with any components change start low and work up.

I knew I joined the right group of guys, thanks for all the info. Im going to load a few at 43, 44, and 45 and start from there.
From what Im hearing my savage model 11 with the 9.25 twist prefers a little heavier bullet. I have a bunch of 65 g vmax done up, so thats why I figured I would try a heavier bullet too, just to get an idea if my gun really does like the heavier pills. Thanks again everyone.

data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

There are several loads listed for H414 on Hodgdons reloading link for .243.

As a side note, Win 760 and H414 are one in the same. If you don't believe me I recommend you call hodgdon yourself as I did.
