Rebarreling

I was thinking of getting a new barrel from pac-nor. I was thinking the same contour as the original which is a 300 RUM on a rem 700 bdl ss action. The barrel would be a supermatch grade and I was thinking of adding an extra two inches making it 28 even. It already shoots 1/2 MOA and I was wondering if it would be possible to get even a smaller group with this particular barrel.

Thats really all you will gain with 2 more inches... around 100fps. If you are rich and have money to burn there are worse things to do with it... but getting that kind of accuracy already, it just doesnt seem like there is a strong need to do it. If its indeed .5" groups thats near enough to tip over Prarie dogs at 400 yards.

Do you shoot bench competitions with it or is this a hunting rifle?

Well that's good to know the gun will be okay for now. I am getting throat erosion at the moment, thus the reason I was asking. Guess I should have puy that info in the original quesion. Even with this it still shoots a half inch with some reloaded 180 sciroccos at 3450 fps.

If the bedding, the gunsmithing, the optics, the ammo, and the driver's ability are up to it, any match grade barrel should be capable of shooting in the 0.3" range. The longer the barrel, the more violent the movement during firing, and the more difficult it will be to find the "sweet spot", but once you got it dialed in, it should be just as accurate as a shorter barrel. The extra length of the barrel won't hurt especially if as you say you're geting throat erosion it won't take too long until you might consider setting the barrel back a bit. That will be cheaper than buying a new one, and you'll only lose an inch or so of length. Best wishes.

Calsibley has right. If you are reloader, tight "T"-chamber is ok, because it makes more pressure (=less powder) and gives longer lifetime for cases. I have reload .308-cases with necksitzing over 50 times.
I like my .22-250, .308Win, .30-06, and 9,3x57 rifles with tight chambers.
