G'day fellas, got a question for you lot.

I have recently acquired a Zastava m85 mini mauser rifle in 223rem. The barrel is buggered and the stock is some horrible plastic stuff. I am going to turn it into a varmint rifle in the next year or so. Was talking to one of my mates the other day and he reckons a Boyds laminated stock is a really good reasonably priced stock. Have looked on their web site, but alas they dont mention the Zastava Mauser on their lists.

Have been told that these actions were marketed over there as some sort of Remington. So do any of you know what model, if any, it was called. Then I might be able to get a replacement stock.

Thanks camel

Camel
Info is a bit thin but
www.boydsgunstocks.com...er-s/8.htm
have the measurements for their stocks

www.zastava-arms.rs/cm...php?id=244 has some dimensions on a barrelled action.

Remington 798 & 799
www.chuckhawks.com/rem...rifles.htm

Remington manual
pdf.textfiles.com/manu...98-799.pdf

All I can think of is pull the action out of the stock and measure everything up and see what boyds have that comes close, perhaps an email.

Who are you getting to do the barrel?

Cheers

Here's just the stock you're lookin for CLick THis It's a Remington replacement stock, I bought one for a Mauser 98 and had to do very little inletting in the action area. It's a very nice laminated stock. The Remington 798 was the one with the Mauser action on it.

WAIT!! Check your action measurements.....I just looked up the Zastava M85 and can't tell what they used. dhc4ever has a link to Boyds gun stocks with critical measurements you can use to compare.

I just got a new 597 22 by remington and the trigger trigger guard, where the hammer and works are the housing is plastic as the stock. If I had known this I would not got it. My toy cap gun when I was a kid was built better.

You have to remember that that plastic is probably stronger than steel or aluminum. Guys used to make fun of Stoners invention and here 50 years later the AR 15/M16 family of firearms is still going strong. My M&P 9mm is mostly polymer and it works just dandy. Another case in point is on Discovery Channel they did an experiment between an old 1950s caddilac and a modern car and the caddy folded like a deck of cards completely destroyed, pax would have suffered fatal injuries and the modern plastic car pax would have survived relatively unscathed.

Not sure about the barrel yet mate, havent really decided which cartridge yet either. Its going to be one of those "pick bits up as they turn up" jobs. Was thinking maybe even getting a Calhoun 19 something, only trouble is lack of projectiles. Will let you all know as it comes together.

Rutland Plywood Corporation (RPC) furnishes blanks to just about every manufacturer in the world who offers production rifles with laminated stocks. Also, virtually every custom and semi-custom gun builder, as well as gunstock manufacturers like Boyds, use Rutland blanks. The stocks for the 798 and 799 are patterned after the old Model 700 ADL.

I looked over the RPC website and found their customer list. Boyds gunstocks, Marlin and Remington are the only gun customers. If I were you I'd contact Boyd's make a query on their product request form at the top left of the main page.

I looked at their cross reference and it doesn't include either the 798 or 799 even though their product line does include the 798.

Ok HERE'S a thousand Remington gunstocks....interestingly I couldn't find a 799....Christ they have everything else. These guys even buy up used stocks (I didn't look in the used inventory) and I'd say if they don't have one they might know where to find one. I've bought from them and they got me the most beautiful walnut stock for a Swiss military rifle.
