Very Happy Great pics there stevecriner and one heck of a nice deer. Stay on those Varmints, the colder it is the more they've got to move and eat. By the way, what's a "Furby" Confused

Hey all Aussie varmint hunting enthusisat here, no coyotes but plenty of feral cats and foxes about the place for some light entertainment Smile We do have dingoes and feral dogs but they are very range specific in my part of the country and not as easy to access.

My favorite playthings are my Tikka 22-250 varminter and my Marlin .17 HMR both are very effective on cats/foxes Smile

We get to do a few things here that I hear are illegal in the states like using a spotlight at night to shoot em. Here is a pic of my boy (right) and nephew (left) after a night out chasing foxes this week.

I'm a new member, as of today. I live in Eastern Washington state. Just started getting into hunting again. There is alot of public land here to hunt. I've been coyote hunting twice since here. No luck yet. I am going again next Friday. I use a 22-250 that I bought in 1978 when I was in high school in Texas. It's a Rem 700 ADL. I plan on doing some calling. I have had them answer me twice but not come in. I plan on saving the hides. So I'll use a hard ball bullet. I am planning on buying a 3x9x42 Sightron S2 scope, I have heard good things about them and they are $199.00 at Midway. Gonna get Leupold one piece mount and double dove tail rings. I have been practicing calling and scouting some likely areas. Any further advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I am Jeff Porter and have been pursing the song dog in central Illinois near Champaign for about 10 years off and on and pretty hard for the last 4 seasons. I love to shoot and hunt and found coyote hunting to be about as exciting as it gets. I learn as much from the days when I get busted or flat miss a shot as I do when I make the clean kill. As experience made me wiser, the pursuit of the perfect rock thrower has made me poorer. I started with an SKS and FMJ and took several coyotes out to 100 yards but felt like I needed to step up in power and effective range, but being on a budget and needing a deer rifle to hunt in Wisconsin, I picked up a Winchester 70 in 30-06 on clearance at Wally world. I started loading it up with 125 TNT’s to go after the long range dogs, but the first time I used it I had a young dog almost in my lap. I started calling across a corn field and the young ‘yote started working the terrain and I would catch glimpses of him as he worked toward me when he made the final run at me I could not put the call down and pick the rifle up fast enough. That was the final hook that got me whole hog into coyote hunting. I hit him with the TNT moving out at 3200fps at about 25 paces square in the chest. Needless to say the pelt was worthless as it took out about 8 inches of spine and both hips. (Quite a mess really). I switched to the 110 V- max at 3311 fps and did a lot less fur damage after that. The picture on my Avatar is my “record” for longest kill. I used the ‘06 with the V-max to drop that female. I counted seven telephone poles up the fence line as I walked out to gather her up and later lasered it to 462 yards.

I went to a Bushmaster AR clone in .223 wanting to do even less pelt damage but my son commandeered that in short order and has taken several nice coyotes with it. The most memorable was a 150 yard shot at a coyote on full run. He had missed a standing broad side 200 yard shot a moment earlier and I yelled at him to watch out cause it may circle back to get to its den. Sure enough it came whizzing back at 40 MPH and he dropped it in a pile. I asked him how he did it and he said “it was just like a video game” He had the Tasco dialed up to 9 power and put the crosshair just in front of its chin. On another hunt, I had my son hooked up with a radio so he could hear me but not talk back. (No comments on how you want your wives hooked up the same way!! Very Happy ) We were on the edge of some pretty thick cover and I had him about 120 yards to the east. As I was calling, I saw some movement in the brush to his left pretty much straight out in front of me about 150 yards east. I radioed him that a coyote was coming in but he could not pick it up through the brush. To his credit , he did not jump up and start waving the AR around rather he turned to me and made the empty hand gesture, I radioed back to hold on to his a$$ and took the shot. I dropped the female about 50 feet from him. Shocked (No his mother was not thrilled about me shooting that close to him either.) He said it mad a sick sound when the ‘06 slapped into the yote.

I since have added a .243 custom built on a Mauser action and a Savage 12 FV in 22-250 that shoot flat and hit hard to the gun locker. One of the hardest things I do is pick which rifle I want to shoot! I have them all point blank zeroed to near 300 yards with a 5’ or less PBZ with hand loads of V-max bullets for each.

I have a Phantom and Cass creek electronic caller and several closed and open reed calls. I like to have a lot of options and change up the sounds so I too am a call junky. I like to mix it up and keep it interesting. My favorite closed reed is the Circe cottontail and the favorite open reed is the Tally –ho.

I have tried two new things for my that some of you may have some more experience with an that is night hunting ( legal for two more days in Illinois this season) and using the howl call to bring the coyotes in. I have howled in the past as a locator tool but am really fascinated by learning to speak coyote. I carried on a ten minute conversation one night last week with a coyote who did not like what I had to say but he was not man enough to show himself. It was really quite cool. I tried to use the Bill Austin techniques in the Randy Anderson tapes from Lock Stock and Barrel. I like the response so far but feel like I have a lot to learn. We have been about 50% success rate on our night hunts and I am learning to watch the solunar tables to pick the right hour to be out at night. So far it has been pretty much dead on for the nights we have success.

Sorry to be so long winded but once I got started it just sort of flowed out!

Shoot straight!

Hello my name is Wayne, I have been hunting yotes for a couple of years now. I learned to hunt yotes in AZ. and since have moved to northern Nevada. Gun of choice is a Savage 22-250, I also have several other Savages so the Club I belonged to in AZ. (Coyote Inc.) called me Savage Death. I love to use moulth calls, the rush you get when a yote is busting in on your spot to get himself a bite will stand the hair up on your neck. Electric calls do have an advantage, no personal movement. Some of us feel that it takes a little more skill to master the moulth calls, and to spot them before they see you. I am new to HuntingNut, and wish to be a part of many conversations in the future. Thank you...

Hello 1895, I also have a Savage model 1895 she has dropped many for the fur bearing filth in my sights. Once I was shown how to use calls I have been hooked on this type of hunting. I grew up in an Elk, and Deer family but never knew what hunting or being hunted was like until Yotes came into my life. Sure everyone has shot at and killed a coyote while hunting something else, but calling them in IS HUNTING!!!
I need to figure out this site I would like to show some of my pics out here for ya all soon..

Hey! Wait a minute... I think I know this guy! Razz

Well, I'll be darned.... it's my ol' coyote hunting partner, Bopeye! Shocked

Yep, like Dimitri said, the board was remodeled a while back, requiring everyone to sign back in as new members. The slate was wiped clean, old posts are gone as are the member's posting history. Confused

Anyway's... welcome back, James! Salute
