A co-worker told me tonight that his neighbor had three goats killed by four large coyotes, which then attacked and pulled down a miniature donkey. The owners were able to scare away the coyotes before they killed the donkey. Naturally I've offered to help thin out the 'yotes!

As you would...as you should mate.

They sound like they are a real problem. How close to civilisation are they? If they are too close then you more than likely will not be able to shoot them....oh well...there's always a bow.

Vince, I asked the same thing, how close to homes, etc. It sounds like there is room to shoot there. We even discussed shooting from a tree stand so that the bullets would be headed down. I think that may add a layer of difficulty, trying to not be seen while hanging in a tree. I'm not sure what outbuildings may be around that I could use for cover. And the folks may simply not want a stranger shooting on their property. However, I've made the offer so I'll wait for a response.

Chambered, it would be fun to have a HuntingNut varmint hunt, wouldn't it!

PS,

Hunting coyotes from a tree stand (or just sitting on a tree limb) is no different than hunting deer. In the wild, coyotes and deer are not used to looking up for danger; just keep the wind on them.

A friend of mine from Arkansas calls the live oaks down here "hanging trees" because the limbs grow almost parallel to the ground....just right for hanging horse thieves....and hunting.

I hope 'yotes don't get any of our goats-although a hawk has been making off with our hens

Cary

How did you train your deer and coyotes to not look up?
My deer and coyotes look up before taking each step.

A farmer upstate lost about 30 goat, cows, and sheep to 'yotes this year it's getting bad -but at least this hunting season for coyotes is longer and less regulated.

I'll have to assume at this point that they didn't want any assistance. Of course it's not like they couldn't find a neighbor to take care of the yotes instead of bringing in a stranger. I'll keep volunteering though!

Coyotes have no closed season here, just can't hunt them at night or with a light.

Very Happy Pslinger-We have the same regs for yotes out here on the west coast -no hunting at night or with lights, but the gamey's tend to look away if you're a landowner losing livestock! Argue Sniper

I was a rancher in a former life and have yet to see any number of coyotes kill a cow. They do hang around cows, just in case one decides to lie down and die. I HAVE killed a number of dogs and coyote/dog crosses which were killing calves. Some of the crosses were hard to distinguish from a full blooded coyote except that the tail was not bushy like a coyotes but was more angular. That seems to the the worst problem we had in the cattle.

However, coyote killed my cat. This was my favorite cat. Mad I hate coyotes. Started killin them after that. Very Happy

Gidday TC. Don't know much of anything about yotes as we don't have them here in Australia...but let me tell ya mate...our dingoes will, and do, take cattle, and they are about the size of a skinny Labrador dog.

One of the biggest problems we have out here as far as canines are concerned, is the inter-breeding of feral domestic dogs and dingoes. Do yotes cross breed with dogs? I would imagine that it is possible because they are both technically a canine...well they managed to get a lion and tiger to cross breed.

My daughter and her husband used to manage a dairy farm out here and they lost cattle to dogs all too often, as did other farmers in the area. Worst time was when a cow was calving. The dogs would zoom straight in and kill both her and the calf.

Cheers, Vince

Vince -Coy - dogs do exist and can be bolder than the full blooded coyote cousins for whatever genetic reasons.

I have not heard of cows being taken down but have seen horrible results when a cow is trying to give birth and a pack of yotes attack.

If the yotes are that bold, it should not take much to do a stake out and put and end to their marauding ways. Deer stand would work well.

Up at the farm, I have shot an eastern yote and just this last weekend, after a rain, saw large dog type prints mixed with deer tracks. We have some late fawns on the place and I suspect the coys and yotes are busy hunting fawns. I have also seen turkeys in areas and then I have seen a yote run across a fence line where the turkeies were, so I know the yotes are hunting turkeys.

The farms around that have cows and goats all have a big, full grown, Jack as a guard, mixed with the other critters. The Jack will kill a yote or dog in a hearbeat as the Jacks hate them, with a passion. Dogs go around the outside of the fence with a Jack in the field. So if you start having yote problems, get yourself a big Jack and rest easy, if you can stand the braying....
Best,
Ed

PS We have no season on yotes, it is SSB (see them, shoot them, bury them)
