This evening I picked up a sporterized 1903A1 Springfield that was rebarreled in .280 Remington. I bought the rifle a few months ago with a ruined bore and a drop-dead gorgeous stock for not much money. Midway had '98 Mauser barrels on sale and I bought one in .280 Remington. The local gunsmith said he could fit it up and he did. The rifle has been reblued, looks great and will get sighted in this weekend.

The best part is that it did not cost an arm and a leg or a second mortgage. All the best...

Hello Gil,

Congratulations. Glad to see you got a winner without having to mortgage the family farm. I knew you were in the market for a new rifle. Nice to see you got one you really like. Best wishes.

Glad you got an old Springfield back in action. That might be the best GP round for the flat lands ever made.

This is my third .280 custom rifle on a budget. The first was an FN Mauser sporter that had been a 6mm/.284 and sat in a gun shop for a year. I got it for $75 back in 1970 paid $100 to get it rebarreled in a Douglas #3 and blued the barrel. Then I came across a Czech VZ-24 8mm Mauser with a ruined bore and bought it for $10. I sent it off to Flaigs in Pittsburgh in 1978 to be rebarreled, drilled and tapped, new safety and bolt handle for about $150. Times have changed. This Springfield job was $90 for the barrel and $200.00 to get it fitted up and reblued. That's the story on my poor man's custom rifles. I am fascinated by the .280 round. All the best...

Hello Gil,

Not to sound alarmist, but I know this guy who simply loves his old military rifles and see him at the range all the time. Last autumn a similar rifle to yours, a 1903 A3 .30-06 blew up on him. He broke a couple of small bones in his face, but nothing permanent. I don't know if it was a ruptured case or what. The barrel seems okay, but the stock was shattered. It was likely weakened from years of gun oil softening the wood. You probably know more about these things than I do, but it wasn't a pretty sight. Best wishes.

Cal,
I always take notice when gun accidents are reported, especially if it involves military surplus arms. If you see that chap again, try to get some details of the root causes that may have been involved. A fellow who worked at Sarco was shooting a 6mm Lee Navy and the receiver ring opened up or something and was a fatal incident. The newspaper did not know what happened to cause the rifle to let go.

We can exercise safety as best we can and I am sure most responsible shooter and reloaders do it. All the best...
