I just bought a ruger mini14. And i was wondering what kind of accuracy i can expect. I tried it on the range the other day. And i could only get 4-5 MOA groupings at 100 yards. I have a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 mounted in the original factory maounts. And i used American eagle 55grs FMJ ammo.
What im hoping for is at least 2 MOA groupings. Questions is, is it possible?

That is typical out of the box accuracy for the Mini-14 using AE blasting ammo. You can reduce the groups with handloading and further increase the accuracy by sending it off for some accuracy modifications. I'm trying to remember the outfit that does the accurizing but its not coming to me right now. You can throw allot of dollars into one trying for more accuracy with no guarantees.
Try some Black Hills ammo in it to see if it will shoot that ammo better.

There is a break in period I think of about 200 rds. so your group might tighten up a little bit after shooting it a while.

You might also want to try Remingtons UMC 55gr fmj ammo. I buy them for $6.44 a box at Wal-Mart. That way when you have it broke in you can load them up using good Rem. brass.

Let me know what happens with it because I was acctually thinking of buying a Mini-14. Right now I have a single shot Rossi that I use for Varmint hunting. Sniper

That's about what I've heard for accuracy with the Mini-14's. I've never owned one, so I'm going with what a couple of other people have told me over the years. One guy bitched at me about the rifle and then wanted to sell it to me, I smiled and said no thanks. Popgun is certainly right about no guarantees after a lot of money, you might want to spend some time working up some handloads, it might improve your accuracy with the least amount of $$ expended.

Welcome to the Forum.

I have several Mini-14s and they are fun to shoot, but are not known for their accuracy. For the money required to tune up a Mini-14 you could probably get an AR and have a more accurate rifle. All the best...

Hauken,
Don't give up on the Mini. I've had mine for 3 years and there are pretty inexpensive ways to make it shoot better. I don't know if I can promote another web site here, but check out perfectunion.com as they have part of the forum dedicated to Minis'. Check out the accurizing section or run a search and see what you find.

Mine shot just about that good out of the box, but after a couple of mods that included polishing the trigger group to get 4 pounds pull instead of about 13, adding a mass damper (laser) to the barrel to reduce barrel harmonics, adding 2 buffers to the (rubber pads made out of inner tubes) to the charging rod it shoots rather nicely. I have a target in my office here that was shot at 50 yards. It has 16 holes through a space you could cover with a quarter. (Was with my own handloads)

I'm still gonna bed the stock when I get some time.

Best of luck.

Don't give up on the Mini 14. I've had mine over 3 years and I can shoot gophers at 90-100 yards with it. I handload all my ammo, did a trigger job to reduce the pull to 3-1/2 pounds and hung a laser on the barrel. The laser is for night varmit shooting, but is also doubles as a harmonic dampener. When I first got the Mini, I was also getting about 4-5 MOA, then I started doing some mods and got serious accuracy with it. (Have a target in my office with 16 rounds in a single hole the size of a quarter. That was from 50 yards. Check out perfectunion.com for tips on how to tighten it up. They have an excellent Mini 14 forum.
