My brother lives in PA and called me today. Said he didn't like guns but was going out tomorrow to get his while he could. He asked me what pistol and shotgun he could buy for home defense. Didn't want to be like NY after Sandy. Told him be prepared to stand in line. Get a Glock 17 Gen 4 with night sights and a Rem 870 12 gauge. |
I'd suggest a wheel gun for a first time shooter - far less to screw up in an adrenaline filled encounter.
Ruger GP100 or SP101 come to mind, as they can be used with either .38spl for familiarisation, or .357mag when needed.
Did I mention I like Ruger revolvers?

In my home defense 12 guage pump I use 1 1/4 ounces of #9 shot. It will penetrate just fine at room to room shots and it will stop in the exterior walls if I happen to miss.... not really likely at that range.
If I have to shoot something at 50 yards I can use one of my pistols or rifles.

Since I'm going to see my brother in a week, I suggest that he postpone his purchase and we do it together. He accepted and now two of his friends want to come and purchase also.

Slim you have an educational opportunity here! I've always enjoyed helping new shooters get started.
