30 06 Loads

Hi! I am new to this site. Sort of a refugee from the old Marlin site. I kept and still use my Marlin 45 70 but just stumbled upon and bought an old Browning FN Safari in 30 06. I have reloaded many different calibres but never the 30 06 Springfield. I would appreciate some suggestions as I live near and hunt Elk on the eastern slope of the Rockies. The Marlin is great but I need a little more reach.

I plan to use either the 165 Interbond or 180 Interlock under IMR 4350 or Varget. Any suggestions other than "get a 300 Mag"!

Yeah, sell any 300mag's you might have and buy a real mag if you want a mag (338 or better).

As for the 30-06, try the Nosler Partition, load it warm (pick a load from a manual). Fiddle with it until is shoots < 1.5in and go hunting.

Find a load for the 165 (or the 165 Partition), zero it and rezero with the 180 elk load. Write down the change in clicks to speed rezeroing with the deer/sheep load. Or just pick one to stick with.

deedmonton, I've been loading the 30/06 for several rifles over the years and have always used basically the same load. I use either the Nosler 165 gr Partition or the Sierra 165 gr SPBT with 58 to 60 grains H4350 depending on the rifle. Start with 55 grains and work up until you find the load your rifle likes. We have been hunting Roosevelt elk for years with these loads and I wouldn't hesitate to tell you the 165 works just fine on elk. Almost everyone I know that shoots a 30/06 has settled on one bullet weight, either the 165 or the 180 and never changes bullet weights for different game. If you think the 30/06 with either of these bullets isn't enough for elk, then get the 300.

These folks have given great advice. I would recommend looking at several reloading manuals such as Lyman, Hornady, Speer and Sierra. There is an IMR website at www.imrpowder.com. My preference for .30-06 loads comes right from the Lyman Reloading Manual using IMR4350. Hope this helps. All the best...

Thanx Guys for the welcome and your input. I'll be sitting down at the reloading bench right away and then to the range with my chrony and some targets.

I am a firm believer in non-magnums except for my 45 70 which is a magnum at both ends! Boy, the hunting season can't come soon enough to try my first 3006.

Deedmonton...You might look at the 165 gr Sierra BTHP and 59 grains of H4831SC. Remington cases and WLR primers. From my Browning A-bolt they give me excellent performance at 2725 fps, ES 8.3, SD 3.4 and AD 2.7. Just a last minute though for ya...

Thanx Coyote. I'll add that to my mix of test loads. I may end up with the Hogdon Short Cut as the IMR brand fills the case rather quickly. I am not sure how some of the loads I've found get 59 and 60 grains of Imr 4831 into the case without major compression!
