If I decided to go above the VX 3 price range I'd go to either Zeiss or Swarovski !!!

I have a 4-16X Swarovski which I really like. The only fault I see with it is it just has cross hairs with no ranging system. For long range shooting; say much over 300 yards, it's quite useful to have mil dots, or some other type of scope with a ranging reticle.

If you're going into the realm of Zeiss or Swarovski you could also consider the Leupold Mark 4 line which have various reticle options. I've picked up a couple of illuminated 4.5-14X versions and each cost me significantly less than my Swaro.

Guess, I'm just a cheap bugger. I've got all Swift scopes of various variables on my rifles, and have nothing bad to say about them. Forgot, I do have a V16 Weaver on my Lowwall. Another fine scope. A guy could go nuts trying to figure out what to get. Very Happy

Ya Slim, you sure are right. The choices will drive you nuts. This is great to have all the knowledge at your finger tips though. I know that everyone will have their own opinion but it sure is helpful in narrowing it all down.

I mounted a new Leupold VX-3 3-9x40 on a new .270 on Tuesday & couldn't be happier.
These scopes are rugged, reliable & well made, with turrets that adjust precisely as designed.
Maybe there ARE better scopes on the market at a similar price but I haven't found one yet that offers the all-round qualities of the Leupolds.
(This is my third 3-9x40 & sixth Leupold scope - all of which I still own & use).

Glad you are happy English Mike. I've got a VX-2 3-9x40 and I'm much happier with my other scopes. The Leupold is reliable and I use it as a back-up scope or an interim scope on a new rifle. A 40mm objective doesn't gather enough light at dawn or dusk and 9x just doesn't have the reach to match my .270 Win.

my .270 has a 3x9x40mm nikko stirling gold crown 2000ish model on it and Im as happy as a pig in pooh with it. Very Happy on 3x its got great field of view and on 9x I can place a more precise shot out as far as I will shoot. 2nd to last deer 300yrd GPS measured. Very Happy I got a collimeter the other day and couldnt resist turning the scope so I now have x crosshairs Shocked I will let you know in time weather I like it or not.

Ok, now to complicate things further........... Here's a package deal that I found. The package includes a Tikka T3 lite in 300 win mag. A Burris fullfield2 3-9 X 40 with ballistic plex. A pair of Burris binoc's. Rings and mount. A shoulder strap and a hard gun case. This package is available for $1320.00 Canadian $$$

There's a world of difference between the VX-2 & -3 as far as clarity is concerned (I still have one of the former on my .22rf bolt gun).
I'm comfortable out to 500yds with the 9x magnification on a 300WSM so there's more than enough scope for me on the .270.

TBH I'd pass on that deal, as the scope is most certainly NOT in the same league as those already discussed here.
CA$790 gets you the T3 & the Fullfield 2 is available for CA$300.
Never mind the extras being thrown in, as they weren't part of your original plan & TANSTAAFL comes into play. Wink

good advice Mike. buy your rifle .270 be good choice then put a great scope on it and never have to worry about it again. Ive killed heaps of cheap scopes in the past. when the nikko stirling finally dies it will be a leopold that replaces it.the cheap scope in the package plus the extras would be ok to give to someone else starting out but if you have the cash get good stuff from the start and save yourself the headaches.

I am a huge fan of the Bushnell Elite scopes (new and old ones). Their Rainguard permanent coating prevents the outside lens from fogging up from your own breath and if it's raining it disperses the droplets so you can still see clearly enough to make the shot. Also, they are rugged and bright.
