Hi all. I am trying out some of the Hornady 100 gr Interlock SP in my Ruger M77 6mm. As far as seating depth is concerned, are bullets with the cannelure normally set at the cannelure or higher out of the case? This is my first time with these and have normally loaded Sierra and Noslers. I dont plan on crimping these.

Thanks

Gidday M-36...welcome to HuntingNut. Grab a beer and pull up a stump mate.

I have always seated bullets with a cannelure so that the neck, if crimped, would crimp into the cannelure.

As an aside, I load .243 and always crimp my bullets. I won't go into the should or shouldn't crimp argument...its a case of whatever floats ya boat, but I like to crimp.

Cheers, Vince

In my 6mm the cannelure is outside the case to overall length specs (bullets not touching the lands) and I don't crimp my 6mm ammo cause I shoot it from a bolt action clip feed rifle.

hi M-36 when I used them in my .270 the first lot were right on the cannalure but the next lot the canalure had shifted so check your rifle to see what depth suits I start with a factory round in the die and work from there.

Thank you for the information. Although probably generic pics, most of the photos of the factory rounds show the cannelure at the lip of the brass. I dont have the Hornady book yet, but just wanted to make sure I wasnt seating to deep. The closest in my Speer book is the 100gr Sierra Grand Slam but the cannelure seems a little higher.

I guess I should have known that if the cannelure is there for those that want to crimp, it must be fine to seat that low, but wasnt sure if reloaders were seating off the lands Bonk

Some seat off the lands and some don't. I seat a 165 grain Sierra .005 off the lands in my .30-06.

If you know the OAL best suited for your particular rifle and don't have a set back problem to worry about. Forget about where the cannelure is located. Seat to your best OAL. Be sure to check your new bullets because the ogive may be different then the other brands.

ByTheWay...You did follow Vince's advice and grabbed a beer and pulled up a stump close to the fire, didn't you?

Welcome to our ever increasing group.

My beer is gone and I have brushed the dirt and saw dust off my butt already. Had to go to work.

Thanks

Welcome to Hunting Nut !!! Howdy

Just because it has a cannelure doesn't mean you have to use it or seat them too that length.
Seat them as you would with any other bullet if you don't want to crimp.
In a magazine fed gun I usually start just under the magazine box length and go from there.

Looking through the Hornady reloading book, there are no loads listed using IMR4350 for 6mm Rem. I am going to have to get some R22 though.

Does anyone have a favorite powder for the 100gr SP Interlock in 6mm?

My reloading last night resulted in seating just below the cannelure, 2.885 I think off the top of my head.

For the 6 mm Remington the Sierra Reloading Manual gives for the 100 grs (spitzer, semi-pointed and spitzer BT) with IMR-4350:
39.3 grs (2700 fps) - 40.8 grs (2800 fps) - 42.3 grs (2900 fps) and max. 43.9 grs (3000 fps).
Have to say my Sierra manual is 3th edition, so not so young anymore.
And for me as long as I stay in the same type of bullet, meaning with a jacket without molycoating, I never had any problems starting with the starting loaddata of another bulletsmith for bullets with the same weight.

For your info: Sierra even pointed 42.3 grs IMR-4350 2900 fps / 1867 ft lbs as their accuracy load.

And look at the reloading database here. You can find 2x 100 grs bullets in the 6 mm Rem with IMR-4350, one with 42.5 grs and the other 43.5 grs. These are not Hornady bullets, but compare them with the data from Sierra and you should feel yourselves comfortable.

Just an addendum when swapping out bullets of same weight think about how much bullet is in the cartridge, not sticking out, that will affect the volume, thus the pressure. ie boattail vs. plain base. Slimjim likes the Barnes and he may chime in but also consider the construction. I usually just load a jacketed this or that but some don't so we can't really assume.

We use RL22 to push 95gr B-Tips and 95gr SST"s just under 3200fps in our 6mm"s ......works great !!!

The standard operating procedure is to drop the powder charge and work back up so you don't blow the gun up by switching a component that you have never used with that powder charge before.

I just had to say it - It's not a law and you won't get arrested if you don't follow the procedures. I just hate losing fellow shooters to accidents that the anti-gunners can use to further their agenda.
