OH, by the way (AKA BTW), the newest item to emerge, according to my oldest daughter, is that Emglish teachers are rejecting papers that have been written by their students which contain "Texting Abbreviations". Oh folks, the world surely is changing for the worse! I'm sometimes happy that I'm about 3/4 of the way through life (if genetics has anything to do with it).

Being somewhat senior myself, I noticed that one accomplishment was over-sighted and I have to say I'm also a culprit but it seems to me when we were in school all those years ago, we learned to read and spell. I don't think it's in the curriculum anymore. It irks me to read a misspelled word (the ones I know how to spell myself, the ones I don't know, I look them up) like some of the easiest ones like 'to' and 'too' are so misused on this forum also. I work in an office that hires recent high school grads (that can't spell) and they have to write out the doctor's prescriptions for me to read, that include some instructions also. Aerodynamic turns into arrow dinamick, polka dots turns into poko dots and what's funny is when the doctor says a word that is very specific to the profession (like micrognathia, or pseudo-mesioclusion) but the assistant has never heard of it, they write down some non-sense that even the doctor can't decipher. We all stand around wondering what the heck was that? They can't even phonetically spell. Have you noticed that phonics is now a newish program you can buy to teach your kids how to read? Used to be, they did that in school. Now you have to pay extra. I know I'm not the greatest of spellers and this has maybe nothing to do with this post (sorry) but I think our little ones need, indeed, to pay attention to their Elders, they might learn something. Free coffee?

I thought I was the only one
that noticed the horrible spelling these days.

OK, for the acronym lovers:
I worked as security at a nuclear power plant many years ago.
SAS - Secondary Alarm Station
CAS - Central Alarm Station
CAP - Cargo Access Portal
PAP - Personnel Access Portal
OC - Owner Control area
PA - Protected Area
VA - Vital Area
Obviously they could mean anything (Special Air Service, Close Air Support, Pennsylvania, etc.) unless used in a specific context. I was once asked what the letter "M" stood for, no context given. I rattled off possible answers (meter, motor, mile, million, ...) and the guy looked at me like I was an idiot. He was so fixated on how HE used it that he'd never considered other possibilities.

Yeap!!! I am in total agreement!!! I know when it first started "texting" cost a fair amount of money! So the "jargon" started coming out in a big way to save money. Well I for one do not care!!!! I like to be able to read the word to understand it!!! Unless it is specific to what myself and the one I am texting knows it to mean. I think that made sense???????
Ah well if it didn't then I guess it really does not matter.
Been having a bit of a short temper lately, and it is starting to show in my dealings with those whose actions are irritating to me! Someone is not around to "balance" me out these days.

I thought you had a child to help "balance" you out. I believe your wife would want it no other way.

Arron, I gotta admit, I absolutely don't understand why anyone holding a TELEPHONE in their hand feels the need to "text" anyone. Its a huge step backwards in communication. The only time I text someone is when I try to contact my youngest daughter because they have poor cell coverage where she lives and texts usually go through better.

To be frank, I hate talking on the phone, guess it was part of my upbringing, that you look at the person your talking to. But texting is alright cause it is kinda like sending a short message/letter to the other person.

The other advantage of texting is the receiving individual doesn't have to answer right away. If I'm not sure a person is in a position to receive a call, I will send a text instead. A text also let's me send a contact's phone number and the receiver doesn't have to write it down.

Well BushMaster, it just is not the same thing! By "balancing" I mean that she would watch me and know what I was going to do or say BEFORE I did it and stop me! Now??? Not there!!!!
While Adrian is an awesome little munchkin man he cannot and will not be able to do that for an extremely LONG time!!! And trust me, if you think a six year old can "balance" you out. versus a wife of over ten years. Well then you have a darn sight better six year old than I do! HA HA HA!!!
