I've still got my old Viet Nam era John Wayne (P38). I use it on occasion to keep it polished.
I'm from the C-ration days. I always thought they were great. I bought some MREs once, just to see what they were like. The were great also. Any of them are better than French fries cooked in JP4! Never had any gastric disturbances from any of them. They're all good. Better than chow hall food most of the time.
I've cussed chow hall food before, but I gained weight on it when I joined the military. It's either good stuff, or it could be that it was the first time in my life that I got to eat three times a day. Being raised by a south Texas dry land farmer can make a fellow look like an Ethiopian charity commercial on TV.

I didn't want to date myself and call it a John Wayne can opener, but that's what I have too...

I believe the P-38 has been around sense the Second World War and was always found in the C-rats box. As you know J W was the nations's war movie hero for both WWII and Viet Nam. Hence the endearing title of John Wayne can opener...
I remember my father asking me if they still made them and if I could get one or two for him as he had lost his over the years...He was on an AKA (auxilary troop transport) in the Pacific going from island to island dropping off Marines here and there. He was a second class cook (E-5) and his GQ station was a 20mm twin mount (trigger man)...

In 22 years I had maybe one or two chow hall or mess deck that produced bad chow. I really can't complain about the food that the Navy served me...It was hot, it was cooked and ther was plenty of it...Steaks to order on Fridays...

I got a couple of John Wayne's in my hunting/camping equipment.
Come this coming Saturday I will be headed off to Bushy's old State with my camping stuff.

Eastern Oregon to do a little camping, hiking, having fun somewhere I've never been. Never been to the US or west for that matter.

Never been much to travel. Been out of the province TWICE in my life. This trip will be double the length of those 2 trips (2 weeks vs one week for both).
