Wolf's Den Gun Shop just got in last week, a Marlin .44 Magnum Lever.
The stock needs lots of work, which will be fun.
I'm waiting for the owner to give me a price on it, so I can bring it home for Zach.
I just hope that he doesn't want it for himself.

He also just got in a used Marlin 30-30 Lever that I will buy if he doesn't sell the .44Mag.
I'm not a big fan of 30-30's but I will buy it if the .44Mag isn't for sale.

KW--I could make them both into Finlander Levers, buy putting corks into the barrels with a 3' decoy cord attached. Very Happy Very Happy

This looks like it could to turn out to be one of those hot and cold discussions. We need to keep this cool, as in the old "hippie" statement, "be cool," as compared to the empty barrel scenario. Laughing

How about, just for fun, let everyone know which rifle or pistol brand name you consider the absolute worst ever made (i.e. junk, too high priced for what you get, always broke down, wore out quickly).

One of the worst ones that I've ever owned is a post 64 Winchester lever action 30-30. That thing jammed all the time and rattled like a tin bucket with a rock in it (exaggeration). The parts were loosely fitted. I'm not a gun smith, so I just got rid of it. It was purchased in the 70s. The only rifle I ever shot the barrel out of was a Savage 270 (I believe it was a Model 70). I killed lots of deer with it for about 15 years (my first 270), then I found that I couldn't even hold a group within 6 inches. Back then I was shooting 3 to 7 deer a year and a little shooting at a ringer set up in the field behind the house. I don't think I shot enough rounds through it to wear the barrel out, but it did.

Good idea Cary.

For me, I wouldn't be caught dead with a Weatherby.
My Dad knew old man Weatherby, and had no use for him or his guns.
Weatherby comes out with a wildcat load, similar to a popular one.
Charges high prices for a fancy gun that only drugstore cowboys would take to camp, and then, charges triple the price for the ammo.

When I see a guy using a Weatherby, I pretty much have him pegged right off the bat, and most times, I'm on the mark about the guy.

You got me laughing there Eric, but I'm not sure why. By drugstore cowboy, you mean like a city slicker cowboy in that funny Western movie a few years back?

Tell us more about these Weatherby guys...

The Fugly prize, imo, should be awarded to most mid-20th century French infantry rifles - the Chassepot being top of mind.
Edit: not the Chassepot, the MAS-36 with its forward swept bolt handle and weird stock. The Chassepot is quite elegant actually, a bit like the Mosin-Nagant.

OK Vint, I have a perfect example of a Weatherby-"Drugstore Cowboy"
My Wife's cousin's husband talks a good game on guns and hunting.
That's his problem.
The more that he talks, the more he shows everybody that he knows nothing about guns, etc.
The last time that I saw him a couple of weeks ago, he bragged about an old Semi-Automatic Revolver that he has. wtf wtf

A few years ago, he told me to bring some of my rifles to his cabin, and we could shoot.
I pull out my Model 70 .338Mag, and he has in a $200.00 hard gun case a pristine Weatherby wildcat that is just a tad above my Model 70 in ballistics.
He doesn't reload, so pays $95.00 a box of bullets.
He goes on to say that it's twice the gun as the Model 70.
On a rest shooting at 100yds, he doesn't hit the clay bird that we have set out in shooting a full box of $95.00 bullets.
I hit the bird the first shot, shooting off hand. Surprised the heck out of myself and Ben, but I acted like the shot was everyday type of shooting for me.

Then, I pull out my Browning Lever 30-06, and Cousin boy pulls out another pristine wildcat Weatherby that he says is a tad better than the '06.
The same thing happens when we shoot.
I'm happy but don't show it, and he continues to brag about his Weatherbys, hunting and everything else.
All of his gear is in perfect shape.
Hunting cloths starched and pressed. You name it.
Whatever rifle that I have, with his Weatherby wildcats, his is just a little better and prettier.
Typical W-Man.

Most guys that I have met that are Weatherby men, are cut from the same mold.
Hire a guide that puts him on a stand or field, shoot the game, and talk the big talk about hunting.

Give me an old Winchester or Marlin Lever man with worn hunting gear, an old dirty gun case, bluing worn off the receiver from years of use, and I will show you a real hunter.

This should stir up that put a little Vint, but I just have no use for Weatherbys or their shooters.

"I shoot Weatherbys and my crap doesn't stink"

End of story.

Eric Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

EB, I think a good conclusion to your tale is that the gun don't make a shooter.

I always took more game with my old Savage with the shot out barrel than most hunters ever saw.

Hunting is just like everything else, there's good ones and bad ones, and a whole lot of bullshitters.

The bad ones and the bullshitters will just tell you that you are just a lucky hunter. But by golly, I must be lucky every year!

Cary

Eric, you beat him and his fancy-pants rifles hands down and he still carries on like an idiot. Incredible gall.

Get him to join huntingnut so we can be entertained first hand. ;-)
