You know how the story goes Tracker :
One man right and the rest of the world is wrong !!!!
man make atempt at changing world, finds resistence and BOOM, world come crashing down.

The sad part was he had a good argument that led to some eyes opening and rethinking their thoughts but wasn't happy with that. Had to push and turn things ugly !!!!!!

Tracker,

Like I told Vince, If you don't know, you won't have to testify at the trial! Really, I don't know enough of the details (as to the players involved) to get envolved in trying to explain. All I can say is (in agreement with Chambered221) that it was ugly.

(Yeah, she told me she's stayin' away cuz she's just afraid of not being able to resist your charms
And you expect to be given a new stump and a beer I suspect. Very Happy
(I'm pretty sure I can still handle sittin' cross-legged on the ground and I wouldn't show up at the party without bringin' a brew for you
And I'll STILL hunt with a loaded chamber... wtf
(I'd trust you with a loaded chamber before I'd trust most folks with a stick)

Tracker,

Don't worry you didn't miss too much. Just the grand ol' debate on Hot and Cold chambers while hunting.

Personally I carry a hot chamber like Bushy. Cool

Thanks for the update Big D. Me too, one in the chamber with the bolt or hammer dropped, cock and fire when I have the shot. I've never had a bolt or a hammer come back on it's own. Course, I'm pretty new at this, Sad only been hunting for fortysome years now.

I hunt most of the time with a hot chamber, although I will go cold when climbing trees, steep hills, or anytime I feel safty is a issue.

What I don't understand is someone with a CCW having a cold chamber, or someone that carries a 1911 with the hammer down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the subject of loaded/unloaded chambers... I did an informal survey of 8-10 hunters I work with and all follow pretty much the same pattern. Unloaded when transporting, climbing into a stand or crossing an obstacle. Otherwise whenever game may appear they are loaded, safety on.

Mike,

That's probably the way most hunters carry their weapons. I consider driving around the ranch (while checking cattle) as hunting. If I have a rifle, it's loaded.

I have been surprised on the subject of "hot" vs "cold" and was interested to see forum members that feel strongly about the subject, often opting for carrying a hunting rifle without a cartridge chambered. I fully support those that believe an unchambered rifle works best for them as it ultimately is a personal choice.

OTOH, I know no one that carries hunting rifles in the field without a chambered round in our area. Maybe, its a regional thing. So, I began to ask customers, lots of them, and found the same thing. Two customers also teach Hunter Safety programs and find the cold chamber idea as alien to what they teach. Of course I also know no hunters that use tree stands, the useage of which is also alien to this area.

Safety is an essential goal of firearm useage; I hope that is universally accepted. Whenever a rifle is not in my hands, it will be unloaded or handed off to another hunter (crossing fences for example). Among my hunting buddies, our concept of safety is more directed toward proper handling of the rifle and making sure it is never pointed unsafely. Never.

In rhetrospect, there have been numerous occassions when an unloaded rifle would have meant a missed kill. While sliding off the safety is an instant process involved in shouldering the rifle, working a bolt or a lever adds time to the movement of putting the rifle into operation, it seems to me.

It would be interesting, however, to have the matter placed as a poll for members of this forum. I am interested in the results.

Chambered...I carry CCW Cocked and locked (loaded chamber).

When in transit, over or under obsticles, handing off to some one or any other pontentially dangerous firearms handling operation, like entering or leaving a boat, the chamber is unloaded. Usually where I park my pickup which is usually where camp is. That's where I start my hunt. Chamber is loaded when leaving camp. Upon returning to camp and within 100 yards or as terrain allows (camp must be in sight) I unload my rifle when entering camp. My side arm is NEVER unloaded...I used to help teach hunter safety to the Boy Scouts in my area when I lived in Washington State. I set up the field course and monitored that course.

As I stated before. I have had only one ND (no such thing as a AD). And that was because I didn't quite understand the safety (half cock) on the Winchester Mod 94. I was only 18 or 19 when that happened.
