Ouch !!!!!!!!!!!

460XVR blew my thumb off today!

No joke, about 1/2 of my left thumb is gone ... what's left is a friggin mess.

It's pretty hard to type, and I'm only posting because you never know, it might save somebody else a thumb. I was using a 2-handed grip, fired off a Cor-Bon DPX .460 and the blast came violently out the side of the gun.

At first my thumb was so covered in blood that I couldn't see how bad it was ... and I was full of adrenaline and felt no pain. And honestly it looked really bad, my whole hand was covered in blood and it was kinda gushing.

The blown-off thumb was on my support hand. I'll re-create the grip tomorrow to see where my thumb was, but it's not like I didn't already know not to get any body part near the cylinder gap. And even if I totally screwed up and did, taking my thumb clean off seems a bit excessive?

Just be careful with those 460's. That case operates at such high pressure, it's just asking for trouble.

BTW, I bought my 460 new and had exactly 12 rounds through it. Info about the gun, it's a full-size 460 with the 8 3/4' barrel and factory installed compensator. It's one of the Whitetails Unlimited models. Ammo was 200gr Cor-Bon DPX.

The gun only had 12 or 13 rounds of the Cor-Bon through it, and 10 .45 Long Colt rounds through it. So it was essentially still brand new.

Saw a hand specialist while there today. Lots of ways to try and save what's left, but first I just have to hope it doesn't get infected in the next few days ... then surgery early next week.

The hand specialist I spent a few hours with last night said that in gunshot wounds there is always a lot more damage than is first visible ... same with things like fireworks going off in your hand. A lot more flesh around the wound is dead, and will rot and fall off over the next couple days. That's why it's so important to keep clean, and that's also why they can't do surgery now. If they wrapped new skin over dead skin it would just puss out, possibly turn gang-green, and they'd have to start all over again.

He is a bloody fool who is bloody lucky not to get his bloody thumb sliced off altogether.
Obviously this guy never shoot a revolver before, and is too stupid to ask or learn how to use the machine.

Daym.. I feel really angry when I see these idiots that have no sense. They creates the myth that gun sports is dangerous because of the idiot do not use the sport equipment correctly and safely. And, what they did? they blame the gun!! (Viz "460XVR blew my thumb off today! "). As if a 460XVR could go out and grab his thumb and wrestle it into the position.. moron!!

That first line should be "An example of how not to hold a revolver" Or "A fools grip on a revolver" or any other stupid anecdote that illustrated the stupidity of the idiot who hold that gun that way.

Or should I say, he should be nominated to the Darwin Award..

Attached is a picture of a revolver he should use...

They call it a cylinder GAP because it is one... duh

Reminds me of the gentleman at the range that was shooting his 44 Auto Mag. His right wrist got tired so he put his left hand on top of his right wrist. Bang.... rearranged the top of his left hand by removing all of that old unwanted skin and those cumbersome little bones. I wrapped a wrag around it and sent him to the hospital. Not much sympathy either, he had owned the gun for about 10 years and knew better. He kept calling himself a dumb a8s and I din't argue with him. Very Happy

Had a gunsmith blow a big toe off at an IHMSA match. He loaded and cocked before he started to get down in his creedmore shooting position. Ouch!

17,
When was that and where? IHMSA has had a decades old perfect record for non injury at sanctioned matches.

First time you used that grip on a wheel gun, huh? This is exactly why children need to be supervised around guns. It's also why firearms instructors were invented, to prevent people from getting hurt. Being old(er) I have the advantage of learning to shoot when wheel guns ruled the earth. Here is the reason that nothing forward of the trigger guard on a wheel gun has any checkering on it. It doesn't have to be a 460 or a 500 to do that, a 357 will do the same thing.
Sorry for your injury I hope you'll be alright and I like you, hope some one else will learn from it and not get hurt.

*Clint Eastwood voice* "Now seeing as how this is a 460XVR and will blow your thumb clean off, you gotta ask yourself one question. Am I that stupid? Well...are ya? ...punk?"

Apparently.

I saw a guy take his thumb off cleaning the wheels of his motorcycle. I laugh now, but I was in the Army and woke up a little hungover, sitting on the bench outside the barracks I see the guy cleaning his motorcycle, he had it up on free-stand and the throttle was locked in real slow, he decided to clean the wheel while it was spinning, I remember thinking to myself that it did not look like a good idea (remember, I was hungover so the reactions were a little off), at about that same moment it sounded like a lawnmower runnig over a big stick...I bagged up his thumb for him, the bike was FOR SALE that afternoon.

I saw another guy put his finger into the hole on a cable reel (kind of like a big car stand, but it holds the large spools of High Voltage Cable) - he said later that he was trying to clean mud out of the hole, the reel shifted and bye bye went the pinky.

Moral of the story - hanging out with me offers a high risk of losing a finger. I was thinking about trimming the hedges in my front yard, I just need another body to help me hold the lawnmower from the other side and we should be able to trim the top....any takers?

It absolutely does not take but a split second to not think something through.... A good lesson for me to take pause and reflect on.

For the record, the pictures were a good addition, especially the one showing the improper way to handle the wheel gun. I hope the shooter is able to saddle up again and tame that handgun - above all - hope the thumb heals nicely! God Speed!

I read the intitial post yesterday, but, something seems a little queer with the way in which the incident was described by the victim. He seems a tad too casual in his description and in his admissions. The victim claims he blew his thumb off the day he posted and I can only seem him wincing in pain as he struck the keyboard, the throbbing, the pain, the embarrasment. He seems a tad too sedated -- maybe he was but . . .

Is this an incident that is verifiable? Witnesses?

And, in which mental institution is he now residing?

If he truly was stupid enough for this to happen then he got exactly what he deserved, but, the skeptic in me suggests ulterior agenda(s) at play. If it truly happened as described I would nominate him as the new poster boy for used condoms.

Thanks Handloader, I'm glad that I'm not the only one that has/had those suspicions. I wondered that before I posted it here and I wondered if someone else would feel the same. I haven't found anything anywhere that indicates it's not true though. Smile
